lol, i saw the same post you saw. it really depends. if you are a hardcore miner and you play the game all day and you have everything set up, 1 day.
otherwise, quite a while. wait till pub 24, see what they do to resource requirements and how they change the y8 and then mine. im doing that.

1550 cargo hold?? Take it that is in a PoB ship
1550 is the Large Starfighter class or something like that. I have it in a Kimogila. I think the Y-8 can get a 3k capacity hold.

My mining setup is a Mk-II mining laser with good damage, a tractor beam and a cargo hold with 1550 capacity. Takes me about 30 minutes i think to get to the asteroid and fill my hold and fly back.
There's a thread I think in this forum with mining macros. I have one that targets the nearest thing and auto-follows it and one that toggles my tractor beam on. Those two macros will just about halve your time out there.
Off the top of my head, they go something like:
Macro: Mining
/ui action targetSelf;
/ui action cycleTargetOutward;
/follow;
Macro: Tractor
/ship weaponGroup toggleTractor;
Macros are case sensitive. Then I drag the Mining macro to f5 and tractor to f6. Blast momma-roid til a chunk flies off, hit f5, hit f6, wait til I get kinda close to it, blast it again. Suck up some baby chunks with the tractor, hit f5, hit f5, hit f5 til no more chunks.
You may have to deal with some Asteroid bandits but I mine in Naboo and they are only level 1 there and literally can't get through my shields so I usually finish mining the chunk I'm on before I plink 'em off.

so does 1 unit of a resource take up 1 space in the cargo hold or do they stack on top of each other?

A cargo hold's capacity is how many units it can hold. When you unload your hold into your inventory it will be stacked like any other resource, but each unit takes up a spot in your hold.

Not neccesarily. I have a 4 2 1 4 SW and even I can make large cargo holds for fighters with a capacity of about 1500, with a SW buff from an ent.
As to the original question, i'd also wait for pub24 to see if they have fixed the YT-8 as i'm sure I wont be the only SW wanting resources by the tonne's !!
