Complete newbie here looking for some ship advice.
I'm using the freelance tier 1 ship, I read that its probably best not to upgrade it at all and wait to get a better ship.
Now my question is, do I just shop the bazaar for a better ship? Should I sell all the parts I'm looting until I know what my new ship has?
Also, the idea of being a ship crafter (whatever they are called) is exciting but not sure if it would be worth the amount of time. Are there any benefits to building your own ships?
Any advice is appreciated. I tried doing a search for ships but all the posts were mostly discussing the higher ends models.

See this post: http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=Eclipse&message.id=561808#M561808 to get a good idea what loot you should keep.
Get to 1100 and buy a dunelizard and a complete set (or use what you loot) of level 3 stuff. Whenever you get to a new equipment level, upgrade your engine, shields, and weapons. If you can't find what you need on the bazaar, try the Vendor tab on the bazaar terminal.
The benefit to building your own ships is you can specifically tweak something without waiting for a shipwright to do it for you. Say you have 2300 mass free and are trying to put on a slab of armor. The 2500 mass Mark II piece for sale will not fit, but the 1000 mass Mark I piece sucks. A shipwright can build a 2300 mass piece of Mark II armor. You can also reverse engineer your own parts.
The downside is it is fairly expensive to buy all the resources to become a master shipwright and once you get there you have to have a large collectin of high quality resources to make good parts.

The Dunelizard is the first ship you can upgrade to as a Freelancer. You can use it as soon as you get 1xxx in pilot skills.
Cost for a blueprint ranges from 10k to 50k, on Bria at least. I think I paid 35k for one that has 2400ish hitpoints.
Check out the Pilot FAQ for pics of all the ships, scroll down to find the picture links:

I'm selling Dunelizards at my vendors on (Bloodfin) Rori and Tat for 15k. Your best bet is to do a vendor search, and compare prices.
I think I might have sold the last one yesterday, so I'll be restocking tonight.
