I'm back after a six-month break, and I'm wondering whether as a 1111 Rebel Pilot I should ditch my newb ship in favor of a Y-Wing. For some reason I have an image of a Y-Wing as a slow bomber-type ship, not a nimble fighters. Is it an improvement over the newb ship?
Also, is it dumb to have my non-combat character as my main space jockey? I just read in here that some space-related stuff in ROTW requires ground-combat skills. I do have an alt who is a combatant; can he do the ground quests and give the rewards to my pilot?

i have heard mixed feeling on using the z95 over a ywing, see what a sw can make u and see what u can do with both ships. its really up to u, and yes some if not most of the ROTW quest requires combat skills. i suggest goin rifleman as it is to get xp and does lots of damage.

Personally, as it seems more and more combat weaves ground and space together to form a whole... I would lean towards having at the least the combat prof the pilot. You can always do pilot as well with your non-combat toon in a different pilot track for a different story line.
You aren't gonna want to take a non-combat toon to the Avatar for sure.

Forget both ships.
Get the new Heavy Z95.
Around 90k mass, great maneuverability. Only 1 gun, but that hardly matters since you're essentially flying a ship that compares very well to the A-wing.
The new ROTW quests that involve ground and space combat can be completed as a non-combatant, though I'd seriously advise getting a bodyguard for the ARC-170 quest and a whole mess of bodyguards for Nym's Starmap quest.
If your alt does the ARC-170 quest, you can trade the ship, but you won't be able to fly it since you need to have completed the quest yourself (I believe).

Sounds like the Heavy Z-95 would be for you. Standard Z-95 with 90k mass. Requires asteroidal materials though, so it will put you back a bit, and you'll need to put in a custom order.
I love Bomber ships though. Ever since I picked up the TIE Bomber; although I can't say I dislike the ETA-2 Actis either, it's a good change of pace.
The Z-95 Heavy is a brilliant ship though, well worth it.

I flew an old school Z-95 with no armor until I picked up my X-Wing on the secondbox of Tier 3. There's little point to the Heavy Z-95 for an up and coming pilot because there's absolutely no components with the mass that a 90k chassis would need...

Except the Heavy Z95 isn't a ship you'd drop after tier 1 or 2. You can quite easily use it up to tier 4 when you can finally trade it in for an A-wing and Advanced X-wing.
That 1 ship will be good enough for most missions all the way up to master.

I recomend upgrading to the Y-Wing Longprobe for the tier 2 missions and what not, as it has more mass and more weapon slots for you to use to kill stuff faster! so you can get your X-Wing!

Heavy fighters at lower tiers are good for one thing:
Heavier shields, heavier armor (start using it, dammit - you'll live longer and post here less about how missions are impossible).

Thanks for your replies. Hmm, I see the Heavy Z-Wing on sale at only two player vendors in my whole galaxy. And I don't have it in my Tier 1 skillbox. (I'm a 1111 Rebel Pilot.) I assume it requires ROTW? I don't have ROTW yet, but I'll probably get it.

No, the new ships do not require ROTW to purchase, build, or fly. You can buy mining equipment, so not even mining the resources requires ROTW. You could technically fly one at 0000 Pilot.
To save some cash, you can mine the 1k Iron Asteroid in Corellian space. As a 1111, though, mining the 1k Petrochem in Yavinian space and getting jumped by Tier 3s might be a problem.
