Is changing squadrons the same as changing factions? I'm a 3433 Smugglers Alliance pilot, but I'd like to change to CorSec. Is there a way to do that without dropping all of my skills and starting all over? Thanks.

No, to change squadrons you have to drop everything. On the up side, as long as you have room for the starter ship (or still have your old one), you don't have to pack up your ships since you'll be able to use them again fairly soon.

Or you could be like me. I'm running around with a Z-95 I can't use, an Advanced X-wing I can't use, and a Dunelizard I can't use in my datapad. Luckily, my Heavy TIE and TIE Advanced are still very much usable. For now, anyway. Storm Squadron is going to be Aced pretty much as soon as I get home, then I can go back to having a datapad full of ships I can't use. Black Epsilon, here I come!

Is there any benifit to going ahead and mastering Smugglers alliance before i switch or is it just bragging rights?

There is the spiffy badge. There is also the fact that you'll get double XP when grinding your way through your next pilot profession. And the fact that you can try to cram some level 10 equipment into your Dunie before you drop, making the grind even easier. I loaded out my Dunie with most of the firepower my Rihx had. And an REd QID. She goes ZOOM now.
