First, make sure your using the mining laser. Sounds stupid but others have made this simple mistake.

Sometimes this happens, not sure why. /Examine it and see was the stats are on it. If you destroy it with your mining laser it should start working. Have in the past for me. Examining it tells you how long you have to blast away at it till it works. BTW, the asteroid will explode but another will spawn is a few seconds.

A lot of times when you first mine an asteroid it will be bugged and will not throw off any chunks. You have to destroy it and a new one will spawn and that one will work normally. Do an /examine on it to see the condition of the asteroid.

Also, get a MkIII mining laser if you have the cert to use one - using the Mk1 reward takes FOREVER. With a crafted MkIII you'll have the chunks flying off in 2-3 hits and crumbling every 1-2 hits.
