Well... sort of. They won't be able to attack imperial targets, but they can help run interference. Since they can't damage or be damaged by other imperials, they could stay close to you to deflect shots. If you are flying all around to fight, though, it might be tough to do.
It works better for missions like the Corvette, where they could just park themselves in front of the guns and "absorb" any shots fired from it.

Against pirates you're fine. also, another option is for them to take the gunner seat in a Ywing, this let's them shoot anything you can shoot.

To me the whole question is moot. Not meant as a flame or anything, but why should Imperials be helping rebels or the other way around? I mean,
isn't this supposed to be a war? I guess there are traitors. Hmm.............could be an option for game content. Just like Jedi gain visibility, maybe people
could get in trouble with the empire for being traitors? I'm an Inquisition Ace. I'd love to be able to hunt down players who flaunted the will of the Emperor
just one too many times!
Vader: It seems that there is a pilot who has..........made a bad choice.
Vader: Go. See to it that he learns the error of his ways.
Meskan: Sir! <salute>
