Unfortunately having to grind through on a PS2 style gamepad, have never had the need for a joystick so dont own one but the more and more i play in space and begin to love it the more and more i realise that a gamepad just isnt viable.

I use a Logictech extream 3d pro kinda pricey for a stick but it has lots of hot buttons on it and your seconday weapon fire is a button built into the stick right whereyou grab it so all you gotta do is squezz no finger movement. You can map a counter mes. there if ya want. 6 other keys right near the throttle so you can shield shunt, next enemy player, target ship in rect. etc.

ONE THING if you buy it at a place like Best Buy that offers insurence on there items GET IT!!!!

At 40+ bucks you'll want the insurence.(its only a couple more dollars) cause im on my 3rd one since JTL came out. But im a emotional pilot heheheh. Also has 3 axis and a;; the rest of the buttons on top.

pretty much any joystick you like the feel of, that has all 3 axis on the stick. I can't remember the name of the new one I just purchased... I had the logitech the previous poster mentioned, mine was just borked... it's a good stick as well.

I'm using my Saitek X45 and loving it. I know some folks don't like having the rudder controls on the separate throttle, but I actually prefer that (guess it's just a matter of what you're used to playing with). And the sheer numer of hat switches, buttons, etc that can be programmed is just sick. The X52 looks nice as well, a little newer and slicker (And I believe you get all 3 axis of movement on the stick if that's what you prefer) but the X45, being a little older, is cheaper (and what I had :smileyvery-happy. I pretty much don't use the keyboard for anyone unless I have to chat with someone in my group, mostly if I'm helping someone and need to tell them something or ask a question. Otherwise I've got just about every command I'll ever need, and some that I rarely even use, mapped to the various switchs, mouse buttons, hats, triggers, knobs, etc etc. A very nice stick, espcially if you want to program all sorts of stuff into it.

Saitek Cyborg EVO. I love it. It's loaded with buttons so you can program them to work however you like and the shape is very adjustable to fit pretty much any size hand or preference.

Logitech Extreme 3d pro is a great stick.

Saitek Cyborg Evo very nice also but is prone to getting dirt in the pots due to its design. (4 Months play and is starting to wander)

Saitek Cyborg 3d is a golden oldie and probably still found very cheap.

Probably getting the Saitek X52 soon, if the missus thinks I've been a good boy

I'm using a CH products Flightstick Pro. It's about 8 years old now and has gotten me through the Wing Commander series from WC II and Privateer on. Simple (trigger, 3 buttons, throttle, and 4-way thumbstick), reliable, and looks like a space ship joystick. Needs a game port. They make new ones for USB but I think they're about $90 or so, kind of high. But if mine is any indication, you'll get a lot of use out of it.

Might be able to pick up a used one, I highly recommend them.

I agree with Kalia, Saitek Cyborg Evo is the way to go.

For the number of customizable buttons (at least 12!) you can make this baby do anything you want.

Sturdy and comfortable, it features a hand rest that you can adjust up and down, as well as being able to tilt the main button pas in the top of the joystick to a more suitable position.

The throttle is located on the base and is very easy to use.

It has a POV hat button which is also programmable (I use mine for the booster at the moment) and the joystick handle TWISTS! which spins your ship!

I have had mine for 3 months, no problems.

And I just saw them at Walmart for under $20 - you really can't beat that.

I have used many in the past, but so far this is the best and most reliable.

I like to spank my monkey on a Force Feedback 2 that's old as hell so it's nice an worn in.

The feedback motors still work so sometimes I like to sit on it and fly into space stations

I'm partial to theThrustmaster Top Gun Afterburner II. Separate stick and throtle controls (can be connected to each other, also) plenty of programable switches, and your choice of rudder control on the throttle or the stick. I don't think they make them anymore, but you can find them on ebay for about $15-20. They also have a force feedback version, but I never cared much for force feedback. USB connector, btw.
