I'm sure I'm making a really stupid mistake, but whenever I type this in and then a number I get the message "subcommand not found". Could someone give me a hand and tell me exactly how I'm supposed to type it?

JTL Pilot UI Commands Would be a great place for you to start. Incidently, it is listed in the stickied post at the top of this forum.
Ends up you are looking for /ui reticleSelect (0-6) - sets reticle style, which I just retrieved from the above post.

Ya i have a couple of them setup on a hotkey. Reticle 2 and 0 are my favorites, i alternate between them once in awhile, depending on my aim, my joystick spiking (damn thing i need a new one), or my general suck factor for the day
/ui radarselect is intresting too. I liked one of them, has a bar resentation of all your ship stats, and the center of the radar is clearer then the default - but cap overload scews the shield view, so i went back with the default radar..
