I have heard a rumor recently that you can gain your master box by just grinding the 7.5 million exp.
however, i have not found any information on the boards to substantiate this. If not though, why 7.5 million exp specifically?
Can anyone shed some information on if i can get master pilot by just grinding the Exp?

You cannot.
7.5 mill is the listed xp cost on the box, thats why its the number given for grinding.
tbh, I think the rumor comes from some pilots who are mean and dont want to help someone with an Ace mission. "Hey kid, go grind 7.5mill and leave me alone" sorta garbage 
really though most times, its idle speculation from somone who sees the xp cost on the box and wonders.

Teir 3 boxes show an XP requirement, but if you got the XP to level, you could not train. The master box works on the same design. You must do the quests.

Unless it has changed post CU I can verify that you cannot gain the Master box if you have the 7.5 mil xp. The fourth time I mastered pilot I got the 7.5 mil just to see if it was possible. It really didn't take that long with 3X xp hangin around in kessel and damn do I have some nice loot.
