I am a privateer, can I switch to rebel by quitting the privateer? If I can how would I go about doing it? Thanks

By switching, you drop all pilot skills, so you best make sure you really mean to do it. Basically u ned to drop all your skills, maybe visit your trainer and reqeust to leave the squadron? I've only dropped it by dropping rebel all together as this removes all skills. But after that, you will need to be rebel on the ground to get reb in space. Then you are free to grind rebel pilot as much as you like.

Talk to freelance recruiterGil Burtin (-1174, -3647) Bestine, Tatooine in the pilot's guild. Tell him you want to retire.
Go see rebel recruiter J'pai Brek (-5072, -2343) Tyrena, Corellia. Join up. Choose a squadron from the options she gives you.

Of note: Stick it out until master Freelance, if you are at least somewhere around Tier 3. The reason: Master Pilot bonus. You get bonus experience for having previously mastered any pilot squadron. It will make re-grinding a new profession much easier.
It's the first thing I do when I get a new character. Master Freelance, resign, Master Rebel, resign, Master Imperial. Voila, instant 4x the experience when I pick what squadron I want him to be in later.
