I recommend going through each faction at least once, try out every ship/skill. Each time you do it gets faster to grind the xp and after you have done one of each it takes like 1/2 an hour to get 1mill xp for a t4 box, so you can swtich back to whatever one you enjoyed most.

Imp pilot or privateer?
Bottom line i feel is this, if you don't intend to grind FP in DS, then privateer is more then worth it. If you decide its not, you'll have a X2 modifer on your master pilot bonus to regrind imp pilot later.

RSF is indeed imperial aligned.
1.) All your trainers are in theed palace.
2.) You gain landing rights to the Emporers Retreat.
3.) You have no choice in what vetter you kill for master - Rebel vette. Hence you answer to the imperial Admiral in theed palace.
4.) ALL imperial ships are white to you on radar, just like if you were an imp pilot.
Now, they are neutral in that rebel ships are yellow to you on radar.
EDIT: Your ground faction is totally irrevant. All you ahve to do to go RSF, is see the Imperial flight coordinator who's conviantly located outside of theed palace and resign from the Imperial Navy. Then just run inside the palace and hit the first pilot trainer you see.

Yes, see edit in prior post.
RSF has no factional conflicts with the empire at all. WHen i was in an imperial pilot PA, RSF was the other option ppl could pursue for that very reason. Any imperial Navy pilot can help you without any problem.
