Thread: Did you swap Roll for Yaw?

its funny, i thought it would feel a lot better if left/right would be roll just like in flight simulations. most people hated it and thought it would make aiming to difficult, not to mention that "pure" rolling is quite different from the effect you get in flight simulations. guess its just a matter of taste but the point that convinced me: its space, there is absolutely no reason why a ship would move anything like a plane. of course sw is a different beast if you look at the plane like movements.

That was the first thing i did when i jumped in to space. I could not handle the feeling of using my twist to roll and using the left and right to yaw. I had to switch it to a more flight sim feel of using the rudder twist to simulate the Yaw of the rudder left and right and put the roll on the left and right movment, to accuratly simulate a flight sim. Once i did this, back in beta mind you, my whole flying skill whent up a notch. I was able to use the "skill" (relativly speaking) i aquired in Air to Air sims to fly the space sim using the same techniques. Thankfully without the Extreme Gforce Blackouts of normal atmosphere flight. I can only immagine what would happen to your body turning 180 degrees in 1.5 seconds doing 1300kph. Can you say gooie mess in the floor of the ship.

Man i hate coming up with ideas for threads at 3am, i tend to ramble. Sorry and Merry ...well whatever or if any holiday you celebrate, may it be a safe one for you.

I too thought the default setup would annoy me, being a longtime flightsimmer. But, I have to say, when I got in space and saw the cockpit frame in front of me, my mind went right back to Tie Fighter, and I couldn't fly it with an airplane setup. I guess it is just the dynamics of the game engine, it works good that way. I think the people like me who played hundereds of hours of the old lucas arts games just feel right with it. Do what works for you. In reality, an airplane banks to turn because that is the best way due to aerodynamics, but in space I think it would actually be similar to the default setup. It is just more efficient to make a turn with one movement than with two (bank then pull). Weird things happen when you take air friction and the need for lift out of the equation

I swapped mine as well. I am used to flying the Flight sims, and while I played all the Lucas Xwing games as much or more than most, I changed the flight controls on them as well.

My veiw on it is this.....As fighter pilots, we fight in space and the atmosphere. (not in the game, but there are many cases in the movies and books that combat ranged from space to air) and to do such effectively, one must have one standard effective flight control. Now while the default style would make sense for space combat, it would be very poor in air combat. On the otherhand, air controls work fine in space. This would seem to dictate that one control system that worked in air and space be used, and that the dominate controls would be those used in air combat.

A second point on the issue would be that any civilization that was advanced enough to deal with space combat, would likley have the ships setup in such a way that pilots could change the way the controls work to meet their preferences, which leads to my real point...all of these issues and any others that can be thought of one way or the other are all trumped by one simple thing.

We are in combat in a 3D universe. This requires all 3 controls to be used to their max effect to be the top pilots. It doesn't matter what stick or button those 3 controls are on, as long as you use them all, and use them better than your opponent.

Argue one way or the other all you want, but if you can't fight with your controls better than the next, you're toast. Spec your controls the way you like, and make your ship dance. The next ship on your 6 could be mine, and Iknow how to use my controls in this 3D enviroment.

Do whatever feels good I say.

The important thing is you learn to use the roll. Most ships are quicker pitching up and down than yawing left or right.

I switched it out as a matter of course when I first set up my CougarHOTAS. And then I switched it back. Having roll in the pedals just felt more natural and allowed me to do moderate 'course' corrections without throwing off my pitch as I was diving or climbing into a target. As you apply pitch to roll you're essentially controlling a right-left (yawlike) movement anyhow. I hardly ever do straight yaw maneuvers unless I'm in a two-seater and don't want to throw my gunner off a target (as inverting yourself by looping makes him have to swing around 180 to continue tracking his mark and, essentially, zero accuracy while you're maneuvering in the meantime).
