After launching 36 mark II space bombs the gunship was still alive. I needed to finish him off with guns. Mind you gunships fly in packs of 3 + figher escourts

Well as long as they behave and fly as if on rails gunships of both imperial and rebel both have blind spots behind and a little below(imperial is a bit tigher). Once the fighters have been dealt with it's a simple matter to just sit behind them and pummel away.

It's when they spiral around constantly that makes them more challenging.

You do realize that 36 space bombs do less damage than 18 seconds of blaster fire from an X-Wing and cost a heck of a lot more?

And even though this has probably been revealed 20,000 times in the last month, it still somehow remains a secret to this day: most gunboats ride in a straight line for a long time, making only a slight course correction every once in a while. Their speed is fairly constant. Their guns have a range of about 525 meters, and your guns have a range of about 550 meters. Gunboats have only one gun (#2) which covers the rear 45 degrees or so. Park behind a gunboat about 530m out, match it's speed, target gun #2, and blast away. When gun #2 is gone, target the reactor and disable it (to prevent further course corrections). Once it's disabled, park at a comfortable distance and attack the chassis. Boom, dead gunboat.

If you prefer to do it with skill, fast engines and powerful guns are in order. Fly at the gunboat at full throttle, unloading all guns into it's hull. Boost away, making evasive maneuvers. Circle around, and repeat until the gunboat is destroyed. This is best done with small, fast ships that are harder to hit. Something like an A-Wing or an Actis or a B-22 would work nicely. Capactior to Shield Shunt 4 makes a nice crutch if you need it.

Missiles of any type are virtually without value in any PvE exercise. Don't waste your time or money. They do far less damage than your guns do. The only benefit of missiles are for sure hits on precision strikes (ie, taking out subcomponents on a large ship such as the Corellian Corvette). Repeat: missiles are positively worthless for dealing damage to most PvE targets. An average level 8 gun, without reverse engineering, will do approximately 6000 damage per second. In the time it takes to get a missile lock on an average space bomb or proton, you would have dealt approximately 43000 damage with just a single average gun (the likes of which every pilot receives as a reward item).

/steps off soap box

Good luck. I hate gunboats and all they stand for
