Thread: How many people to mine in a PoB ship?

Tried mining for the first time last night and it was simple enough but boy does it suck having such a small cargo hold.
So i got to wondering about POB ship mining. 3500 is a nice improvement. however I would expect i need 3 people to mine in a POB ship. 1 for piloting 1 for the mining laser one for the tractor beam.
im sure i remember someone saying though the tractor beam can be used from the pilots seat in POB ships. is this correct?
if not i guess i'll just need to land every 10-15 mins to unload :/

I would stongly recomend geting a 1550 cargo hold from a shipwright and doing it in a fighter... I have seen POBs try to space mine it is a mess... and all you end up wit is people like me chasing the 'roids that got away down.
To put it another way two compitent pilots, even with puting down between loads, can out mine 3-4 people in a POB, it's not worth the extra storage.

normal configuration.
pilot - front gun mining laser.
top gun, tractor beam
tail gun - defense weapon (when attacked)
so yes, the pilot can mine and a 2nd player sitting on top tractor beaming up the roids. and visa versa
But u will need team speak so the 2nd player can tell u to head towards the floating roids.
It is a real pain, as like the other pilot sugguested, single player ship (Krayt like mine) 2 mining lasers and a tractor mean. takes about 7-8mins to fill 1550 hold.
The only waya mining ship would be usefull is a full 360 degree tractor beam with a pull of 500-1000m from the ship. Also a tractor beam speed increase.
What would be nice is if the mining ship could tractor beam in the primary roid that is released from the astroid.

so even if you are properly organised you wont fill the 3500 pob hold in 30 mins?

Probably not, the POB ships even the Y-8 are severely lacking in any real ability to mine.

is that down to maneuverability or the poor positioning of the guns?

Three individual pilots should be able to pull down 4650 units in 15-20 minutes. That includes travel to and from the asteroid, it takes less than 10 minutes to actually fill a 1550 cargo hold. If you can't beat that with a crew of 3 in a YT/Nova/Deci/Y-8, than it is not worth it. I wish it was worth it.

Quick tip, if you have ROTW, hyper to the Kash Neutral point. It is only 2k away from the starport. Land, unload, and hyper back to the sytem you are mining. I think this is the closest hyperpoint to a starport in the game.
