I need to upgrade my system so space can stop looking like a 1920s film, i have very little computer knowledge so figure building a system would be out of my league. Here is the system ive been thinking of buying but i want to get some advice from people that know more then the reps at Circuit city can say
HP pavilion $899
athlon 64 X2 3800+
processor speed 2k
250GB 7200RPM hard drive
ram 1GB 3200 DDR sdram expandable to 4GB
available slots 2 PCI 1 PCI express
no FSB listed
will need to add more ram probly 1gb more $100
and a video card thinkingthe gforce 7800GT $399
am i on the right track with this setup the computer is mostly used for gaming but would like to keep my options open for down the road, was hoping this would last me a couple years

That seems like a good price for the pc, I use tohave an hp as well with an amd 3300+, and 1 gig of ram, It worked fine for me for about 2 years only regret i had with it was the bundle of useless software that hp puts in its computers, Really depends on ur budget how much ur willing to spend and what type of games u want to play on it like just swg or maybe in the future games like quake 4 so one........I can say one thing though the nvidia 7800GT is great i got two of them on a SLI motherboard and its amazing!.............if u want some more indepth info i can email u if u send me a message on what ur looking for so on and what u want to do with ur system

Not that this would be the only game that you play - but SWG is known to have issues with SLI and is not SLI-enabled. So don't go SLI solely for SWG - you'll be wasting your money.

Be carefull with those HPs the power supply in it likely will not handle a 7800... it is much better to get a PC built to you specifications by a local shop if you can.... but it is a little more expesive up front... whether it is in the long run is debateable and depends on the shop.

ya avoid hp/compaq crappy power supply and propiotory systems(most parts soldered to board hard upgrade)
either find a store that custom builds or try www.alienware.com www.dell.com or vicious (dont know there url)
and try get mainboard with nforce4 chipset cause if you ever decide go nvidia sli or ati's upcoming crossfire you will not be able to if dont have nforce4 and two pci-express slots
find a mid range alien or dell then customize till your price range even if means down grading, remember
gforce 6800 still way above norm and unless you running xp-64 edition or win 2000 server your windows wont reconize above 1gb ram
programs will use extra but windows wont
so 1gb still more than anough
i have 1.6gb but i have older style cpu and vid so have extra ram to compinsate
amd xp 2100+
1.6 gb ddr 3200
ati radeon 9600pro(128 mb vid ram(ddr2)) still a magor card
onboard sound
also remember todays onboard sound is so high end you dont need some fancy 500$ sound card

Ehhhh...personally, I don't like the idea of buying stock systems if you're planning to upgrade/customize at all anyway...just buy parts seperately and build it.
Besides that, HP is a company that builds printers...they're good at that. I don't trust them in the PC department though, just like Sony...they make Walkmans. I don't trust them to build PCs or develop software...
...wait a sec...
