I tried this mission about 6 times last night. This is the first mission that you get from the guy in Dathomir, and it is to kidnap an Imperial Officer from a Lambda Shuttle.

I am trying it solo in a Y-Wing. The setup I have is not bad, and I can usually take out enemies pretty quick. The problem I have is with TIE Fighters. They are too fast, and I cant keep up with them as they fly circles around me.

Last night, what I did was target the Lambda Shuttle first, then shoot its engines out. Once I got the messege that it was disabled, I started after the two TIEs that were with it. I took them both out, but by this time, I already had a little damage to my shields. Then I moved on to where the shuttle was being attacked by the 5 or 6 TIEs that go after it when the droid is flying it to the rebel base. The first time I succeeded at this, I was shooting at the first TIE when I got the messege that the shuttle had made it. At that point, I used my IFF Scramble and boosted away from them, and lost aggro. Then I went to meet up with the Rebel Gunboat, and got really damaged when I was trying to dock with it. I did dock, then started fighting the TIEs there, and got blown up. I repaired my ship (only the 75% that the nuetral station there would let me reapair ) then headed back to the gunboat. I got jumped and tried my best. I made it to the pilot saying he was at 66% on his calculation for jump to lightspeed, then died again. After that, I didnt have the waypoint back to the gunboat, and had to start from the beginning. I tried a few more times, but didnt make it back to this point even.

Is this mission solo-able? In a Y-Wing? Am I correct in assuming that even if I grind out to get my X-Wing cert, that this guy will not train me until I finish his mission? Any tips if I am able to solo it?

If anyone on Radiant needs this mission, contact Habu in game. I would love some company

First, are you using droid programs? You mentioned shield damage, so I doubt it. They make a BIG difference.

Second ... well, maybe later, after you say if you're using droid programs.

I did it with a Longprobe. You don't need droid programs for that. I actually did it with crap looted non-RE'ed parts, and suffered very little damage (only damage was to armor) when I finally succeded. Slow down to shoot, if you're flying at about 1/2 speed or just under you can usually follow TIEs all over. It gets MUCH harder after that first part, though - you'll eventually need IFF transponder scramble and Emergency shields, but I still did it without droid programs. The programs no doubt make it easier (since then I've started using them somewhat), but I still managed without. Just... not a regular Y-wing, those are disgustingly slow for their weak armament. Get a Longprobe - twice the guns is remarkably more powerful. Of course, an X-wing is about 40x better then Longprobe anyway, so get that piloting license as your first bubble, I'd recommend (I did).

The reason that only astromech droids should be able to enhance ships... Think of a protocol droid:
"Oh, we're doomed!"
"I can't say how much I hate space travel!"
"The odds of surviving a direct assault on an Imperial Star Destroyer..."
"This is all your fault!"
"But sir!"
