just completed this mission for the second time using the same method, so it definately does work. this is the updated version:

you need to take an a-wing with a decent engine (the 79spd reward engine worked fine), a good shield of 1000+ (you need hitpoints over recharge rate here), a fast droid interface, and a booster. yourcomputer must have weapon capacitor overload 3 and capacitor to shield shunt 3, or the probability of you going boomis substantially increased.

the mission is to protect an npc from a large collection of tie's and a tie agressor.if youmanage to get through the whole group, you have to kill yet more tie's and a decimator. if you're solo, it's nigh on impossible, so try this;

fly to the npc, dock with him, and follow him until the first spawn turns up.

disable as many tie's as you can,but do not target the aggressor. you should be moving too fast and turning too much to take any substantial damage,but if you do, stop shooting and concentrate on boosting your shields and dodging fire. don't worry about the tie you are supposed to be protecting, just concentrate on staying alive and out of the way.

as soon as he goes boom you will get a message saying you have to go to a waypoint.keep dodging, and thirty seconds or so later the next spawn shows up.at this point, scramble your iff and run towards the waypoint.

a short way towards the waypoint you will get jumped by yet more tie's- blast straightpast them and keep on towards the waypoint. as soon as they start to gain, hit the booster, which should give you some more time. if they get within 500m and start firing, turn, burn straightpast the group, run about 1k, pull another turn and go backpast the group towards the wp. this might sound suicidal, but if you yaw side-to side as you headto one side ofthe group, you take surprisingly little damage, and you should hopefully only have to do this once before you get to your destination.

when you get to the waypoint, a yt-1300 will spawn in short order. start the docking process as soon as you can: the tie's will probably be all over you by now, but the yt is so big vs. your a-wing that it will shield you from 90% of the fire, and npc's seem to be really bad at hitting stationary ships.

as soon as the ship releases you, the mission is over. start plotting the jump to hyperspace and go evasive, and hopefully you can get out more or less unscarred.

happy flying

yeah I tried this method a few times....and no you don't have to protect the pilot....(wait a minute, this guy is in a tie fighter but moving like a freighter...anyone notice this...LOL, why does it take him so long to hyper out of the system)......anyway, I pride myself on saving him though, for god's sake he's a fellow squadron member...protect you own....but the problem is that if you don't have good shields, this method will not work or is very very very difficult to pull off.

The reason is because, during the first encounter, the tie aggressor will eat your shields alive....if you can manage to stay out of it's turret range, then consider yourself lucky.....but if you engage it...you will more than likely have to use IFF scramble just to survive the first wave....by the time you go to run from the second wave, if you can't hold out for another 3 minutes (the time it takes to use another IFF scramble which will probably fail anyway), then there is no way you will outrun any imperial ships....the only time I'm able to outrun imp ships is when I have engines with speed in the high 80's or more, use engine overdrive and have some boosters that last long (soon as the boosters run out, they start catching up...hyperspacing becomes the only option then).....otherwise, in a y-wing or x-wing, you will not outrun imperial ships unless it's a bomber and maybe the aggressor.....a a-wing can outrun them, but it's defenses are so weak, you won't have the opportunity to run because you'll be blowing up instead.

anyway, the method you describe can work and that's only if you save your iff scramble for the last wave, stay away from the tie aggressor and hope the decimator doesn't swat you like a bug. Turrets are your worst enemy on this mission, they will have you wanting to trade in your wings for a ground profession...hehe.

I tried this mission in a x-wing, a-wing and longprobe....it took shields of 2500 strength on my longprobe with cap to shield shunt 3, a couple of emergency shield commands,1 iff scramble and a little help from a master pilot to complete this misson....the funny thing about getting help from the master pilot was that he died twice during the mission and I only came close to dying once (he was in a x-wing)...if it wasn't for my droid commands firing off every 17 seconds...I wouldn't have made it either.

also Iremember that there are4 waves not 2....the first wave hypers in and about 1 minute or 2 later another wave will automactically hyper in while your still messing with the first wave......the third wave has the decimator and the 4th wave will jump you on your way out.....but it's been so long since i've done the 4th mission, it might be just 3 waves instead of 4....ah well, this mission in terms of difficulty is probably the 3rd hardest...only the vette and SD are harder...from a solo standpoint that is.
