Honestly, I skipped the Y-Wing till near the end of Tier 3. I think I used one on a mission against a YT-1300.

Despite the ship certifications being setup in a "level ladderish" structure, it doesn't necessarily mean the highest cert ship you can fly is the right one for the job. What it sounds like is you're having trouble dealing with the Y-Wing's maneuverability...namely it's a flying brick. A z95 is completely capable of seeing you to Tier 3 and an X-Wing, especially if you keep upgrading the components.

I'd honestly suggest climbing back into your z95. Until you get access to the longprobe, you won't have a good single seat dedicated bomber. And you won't be able to take full advantage of the Y-Wing Longprobe's mass till tier 4ish. It may turn out you're not really cut out for bomber style ships, like me. I have a B-Wing but have tons of issues dealing with its maneuverability. If the Longprobe is a flying brick (and it is), the B-Wing is a brick wall crashing down on unsuspecting pedestrians.

Look into getting some chips of Engine Overload burned from an Imp

Longprobe is better than the standard Y-Wing because the Tier 1 Y-Wing is a 2 seater. Can't fire both guns without a gunner. Longprobe gives the pilot 2 guns and 2 launchers to control.

But if you're having problems drawing a bead on targets, could be you don't want to use the Y-Wing yet. It's not really necessary at that level. But if you do, you'll want to:

  • Find a decent engine with high YPR to counter the Y-Wing's lack of maneuverability

  • Cut speed to about 1/2 throttle to maximize what maneuverability you have

  • Look into getting some chips of Engine Overload burned from an Imp

Those will help a lot

NPC Tie Interceptors are the hardest ships for me to destroy, including NPC A-Wings. There is something odd about them, like their hit box is really tiny. The gunsight indicator seems to be off more than usual when targeting them too. I've destroyed hundreds of them by now, but they don't seem to ever get any easier.

Y-Wings and Y-Wing Longprobes are good ships. You need to have a good engine with decent YPR (55 minumum 60+ better). Always carry the biggest weapons and shields you canas soon as you are certed for them. I flew the Y-Wing Longprobe from 2211 right upthrough 3433 (where I am today). When I got 2322 I went out and bought some excellent Mark IV (cert lvl 7)shields, armor and weapons. They made the rest of tier 3 a cake walk. I never moved to the X-Wing because my best equipment now totals more than 130K mass.
