So, when you're shooting at your target, aim for the green crosshair in front of them. If you still aren't hitting, try shooting just off the center of the crosshair, towards their ship.
The difference between a Damage-Registering hit and a Non-Registering hit is that the Registered Hits make the shield get all "Crazy Lightning" looking, and a non-registered is a solid blue orb.
it sounds to me like it may be your wep, you said your useing an ion cannon, if memory server there high v shields and low v armour, im sure someone will correct me if i got that the wrong way round again ![]()
if his shield is dropping to 50% then you will have dropped his back shield and will be hitting his armour, and since your gun has lov efficency v armour it sounds like you just arnt punching through it fast enough and his shields are regening,
might help if you try a standard blaster with middeling efficency v armour and shields, may take a few more shots to bring down the shields, but it should be more effective v the armour which i think may be your problem here.
Thanks for the quick help. Now I'm thinking it could be the client-side/server-side thing. I had assumed when the shields reacted, I'd hit him. I will look for the "Crazy Lightning" effect. It's confusing because all the Tier 1 guys die in about two seconds.
Can someone briefly explain what Shields 50% means, exactly? I got myself the ion cannon because I thought shields had to be completely destroyed (0%) before I got into the armor, but the previous post makes it sound like this isn't the case. Is it something like, "shield hitpoints = 200, x 50% puts them at 100, so if you do damage of 350, 150 (350- 100 remaining shields) of that goes against armor ...?" And how does that interact with individual components? If I'm targeting Reactor, do any remaining damage points (less the remaining shields) go against Reactor armor hp? When it says "Reactor=77%", is that the Reactor armor hp, or just Reactor hp?
Sorry, I know that was all over the place. Believe it or not, I have read the stickies ...
Shields at 50% means you destroyed all of the shields on either the front or back. 0% would be no shields on either side. If you were on a ships 6 the whole time and its shields were 50% and armor was 50%, you would start to knock components out.

#1 - First of all, in SWG space its not just important to hit the enemy ship, its important to hit them the "right way." Personally I think this is really stupid, but that's just how it works. You can "hit" the enemy with your guns all day long and it might do NO damage whatsoever. This is what happened to me and sounds like what is happening to you. What is important, as was stated by other posters, you need to hit the enemy at an angle close to the lead indicator.
While shooting the enemy can look like you're hitting, sometimes you're not. Its frustrating and pointless, but once you learn this life will get much easier.
#2 - Ion guns are good against shields, but stinky against armor. You never want to use just an ion weapon or just a disruptor. They can work in combos, but try to avoid using them alone.
#3 - All ships in this game have front and rear shields, though when you target them all you see is a percentage of the TOTAL shield. So if the enemy has 0% rear shields and 100% front shields you will still see that they have 50% shields on the targetting display. If you keep doing damage from the same angle you're not going to get the shields lower than 50%. That's ok though, as long as you have punched a hole in one shield you can start hitting the armor and vital components.
