Thread: Tips for handling the big ones?

Anyone have any tips on how to handle the big slow ships like the Rihkxyrk or the Krayt? I love having huge amounts of mass and lots of weapons, and I don't mind the slower acceleration, but it seems that the big ships are so much more sensitive than the fast ones. I was constantly correcting and overcorrecting, which meant that even though I was packing 3 guns at once, I was missing way too often. I guess I was treating my Rihk a little too much like a dog fighter. What's a good way to follow those speedy little buggers? Thanks a million
Well I mastered freelance pilot almost 8 months ago now and have been flying my Krayt ever since. I actually love the heavier tank type ships but can't say I''ve really given the lightweights much of a chance to compare them. I do strictly PVE flying so my style is definitely not what you want to use for PVP. I also have never played flight sim games so this is coming from the viewpoint ofa standard gamer learning how to fly in JTL. But I can share the general tactics I use for all they're worth. I'm sure there are many experts out there who can elaborate in detail.
When flying an escort mission for example as soon as the enemy targets appear I fly out directly to meet them. I can usually blow the first target up quickly by firing head on at it with my 3 level 8 RE'd reward guns and using WO3. I then just target the nearest enemy and fly at it sometimes shooting head on but usually trying to get behind it and then sticking on its tail til its blown. For me the secret is in controlling my engine speed. I RARELY use full engines in battle at all but only when needing to get within range of the target. Once engaged I find myself cutting back on the throttle to around 350-550 speed as I track behind the ships blasting. Depends alot on the ships you are attacking. Some of the faster ships require alot more movement and adjustment on my part in a big ship but I really don't feel like I have that much trouble keeping up with them. I tend to make big arcs looking at my radar and altering my speed until the target is back in front of me if they happen to zip past me too fast.
I can honestly say that only Tier 5 gunboats and vettes give me much of a challenge anymore. By using CTSS 3 with my 2555 shields I rarely take on serious damage from regular ships. Of course the numbers of enemies will make a difference and I have to say those buzzy little Droid ships - Jillion Bolts Co. in Endor space come closer to burning thru my shields than any others outside of Deep Space. They attack in groups of 8-12 Tier 4s and 5s and can cause me to boost out at times just to take a breather lol.
As to a big ship being a dog fighter I really do think the Krayt is in a class all to itself. In spite of its mass and size it is remarkably quick and maneuverable esp if you have a good engine with nice PYR. I find myself doing rolls and turns quite a bit. The main thing is you get used to whatever you fly the most. I am totally comfortable in my Krayt. I Know how she handles and when to pull her back or let her run..it all just takes time and familiarity. ![]()
