I have a question. Like the subject says I'm currently a Rebel pilot working out of Yavin 4 with 1/1/1/1 in abilities earned. If I were to switch over to being a Freelance pilot would I get that experience already used back? If not does the starship experience I've earned but not used still be good?

If so who do I have to go to, to switch over? Would I still be able to use my Z-95 and Y-wing or would I lost all Rebel pilot abilities? Or do I lose all ability to pilot these ships?

You'll lose all XP, used or unused. You'll also lose all rebel pilot abilities, including the certs for the Z-95 and Y-wing. You'll have to talk to the rebel coordinator in tyrena to drop rebel. Then talk to the privateer coordinator in Bestine Hotel to join up for a freelance squadron.

And make sure you unload (and/or) re-deed the Rebel ships, because once you drop Rebel pilot you don't have access to those ships or the components on-board.

I'd recommend the Freelance CorSec squadron as it's the easiest to do.

Thanks everyone. I've check the Bestine Hotel but I don't see anyone to talk to about becoming a Privateer/Freelance. There are Imperials there though. Should I just go somewhere like Corsec or RSF and sign up directly with them or see if i can or must I find someone else first?

There should be an NPC near the bar in the Bestine Hotel that gives you the waypoints to the 3 Freelance Recruiters. Alternatively you can just go to the tier one trainers themselves.
