I posted this in the shipwright section of the forum, but I am curious what thoughts players would have on it here as well. The premise is that as your ship's chasis condition deteriorates from heavy usage then the mass of components you could put into it would go down as well. As an example, if your ship had a mass of 40k, and after many epic battles in the stars you managed to lose 25 percent of the original chasis to decay then you wouldn't be able to fit more than 30k in parts mass into it.
This would bring more life into the market for ship chasis... What effects ( both positive and negative ) would this have on your play experience?
I realize that this would be unpopular with many people, so I'll save us all some time: "I hate this idea, it sucks!"
OK, now tell me why you like it, or don't like it?

Absolutely horrid. The quest-reward ships are already one per person, causing their mass to crash as your wreck them will upset way too many players. On top of that, new pilots will be slaughtered. Many new pilots (especially Imperials) have mass issues to begin with. They also tend to get themselves blown up a lot, since they aren't really sure what they are doing. I probably would have gone through three or four ships during my first attempts at Storm Squadron's third tier if a system like that had been in place. Having your ship suddenly no longer be able to carry the components you were using up until that point, having to use lower certification components to try the mission again, and still having no idea what you are doing wrong is a recepe for many players to never go into space again. Not a good plan.
Finally, as a shipwright, I oppose anything that causes me to have to craft more chassises. The things are way too resource heavy, boring as all get out to make, don't return nearly the kinds of credits that equipment does, and generally a huge waste of time. I'll make them if someone asks me to, but I've stopped making them just to sell. Chassises should last longer, not die off faster.

Personally, I think if we want to help SW hold more worth, as most are annoyed at quest ships anyway, why not allow them to craft insanely priced chassis repair tools? I know I would buy one.

Too resource intensive on SW's, low return on investment.
If you want to help sw's, their components need to be better. Currently, almost all RE jobs then are chosen from a slightly larger pool then the RE level are better then the SW can craft. This should go down to about 30 to 40%. RE would still be the best stuff, but take much longer to make the real good parts, in the mean time, we'd use SW crafted.
E.g.:Get the first 10 L8 engines you loot and a QID, and you have something better then SW's can do. This should be more like 50 looted L8 engines and the QID.
And if a dev reads this: Don't nerf the loot! Bring up the SW's stats. They've got plenty ideas. Like putting PYR in a single experimentation line.

a question on chassis..
what happens when a quest ships chassis reaches 0? can it not be flown anymore? and are you able to do the quests again if you delete them?

Quest ships don't reach 0. They go to 10 and stop.
As for deleting them, why would you want to?

When it hits 10, the chassis would not protect the components as much as it did when it had 2000.
