Thread: Hitbox Research

Ladies and Gents -

I want to do some hitbox research - but it's hard y'know?

Basically I want to gather screenshots of the hitboxes (at 100m) of the following chassis:

A-Wing<------------------------------------------ (((WILL USE LEAPH'S A-WING)))

TIE Fighter (HEAVY)

X-Wing (HEAVY)

JSF

GSF

TIE/Interceptor

TIE/Advanced

RGI

Scyk

Dunelizard

Vaksai

Basically what I am wanting to do - and with your help, it might be possible - is to determine the actual size of the hitboxes... (IE if the Scyk is 20m long - and we are viewing it at 100m... you can determine the ratio and the actual size of the hitbox **math hurts**)...

Anyone else up for this - or think this is a good idea? With all the talk about hitboxes I think it would be useful to be able to say,

"The JSF's hitbox is only 45% of its total chassis size, while the X-Wing is 75%..." and "in contrast the RGI is approximately 35% with 50% of that off set"

****EDITED TO INDICATE WHO THE MODEL IS FOR EACH CHASSIS****

The easy way would be to simply group up these ships in one group, space them evenly apart and then take pictures of them. The group box actually shows the damageable hitbox.

not exactly, but it is probably the best visual approximation. at close ranges on larger ships you can damage outside the group box indicator, and at long ranges on small ships you can fire inside the indicator and not score, because the box size changes with distance. at 150m for example, the group box is not a good indicator of the hitbox of the IGI. but at 20m it's spot on. conversely at 20m the group hitbox isn't the best indicator on a scyk, you can score all over outside the box, but at 150m it's spot on and traces the group box line exactly. fall back to 250m and you can peg just inside the group box and miss consistantly.

also, try playing with your FOV setting, that will alter the group boxes size as well, as the target appears to get farther away visually.

i think at the very least we should get a JPG together with various ships at 150m (or closer). if we can get all those ships up there in a single graphic then we can start arguing and testing and seeing what is a valid size for each hitbox. the end result would be fantastic for going to the devs with and saying "hey listen, what is up with this?"

my only point would be, it would be important if multiple people were submitting pictures, to use the same resolution and FOV settings, as that can change the appearance of the picture wildly. imo the ships should be naked (ctl-shift-h), because the clutter can get kind of confusing otherwise. hmm but then how are you sure of 150m... it's a big task if you want to do this right. also, should we havea standard as to which angle we take the pictures from? looking down at the top of the ship? what about background? it's alot easier to discern the ship at 150m when presented against the tatooine skyline than it is to just see it in black space.

i'd be glad to help with all privaterr and imperial ships, if we can hammer out some consistancy in how to take the shots.

I would like to take all the pictures at 100m (between me and the ship in question)...

If you can volunteer for particular chassis - and arrange with me times/dates - I will come over to your server to take the picture.

Sooo sign up!

=)

Oh I plan to take the shots against the backdrop of black space -

Reason:

The colored box is easier to see against BLACK than anything else, at least on my screen. I plan to use the 'group hitbox' as the indicator... even though it is very likely that box is not the exact hitbox.

I believe we will find the hitboxs arent thaaaaat skewed (maybe misplaced but not thaaaaat skewed).

I think we can show a certain % range on the hitbox and determine what variation would be 'wrong.'
