So, what happens when the hp on the chassis reaches 0?
How worried DO I need to be about decay on my ships?

Thanks.

If a poisonous snake is dropped on top of you from a gyrocopter, don’t freak out and shoot your own driver with your arrow gun, making the vehicle lose control and blow up. Its probably just as scared as you are.

i wouldnt worry much about chassis decay.

while you advance you change ships a lot anyway.

once youre master and hang around in deepspace you dont have to worry about decay anymore. (deepspace is decayfree)

Chassis HP is how much damage the ship superstructure can absorb before disintegrating. Having a high number means you might be able to take another few shots, after you lose your Shield and Armor, before exploding. Having a low number means that, if you do lose Shield and Armor, you going to blow up very quickly. If you expect to die as soon as you lose Shield power and Armor points, then Chassis HP and individual Component Armor/HP means very little.

Damage is rather randomly split between Chassis and Components, so the combination of Chassis HP and Component Armor/HP really can keep you flying after taking a bit of damage past your Shield and Armor. As soon as a Component reaches 0 HP it is disabled, so using something like a small Reactor means it may be the weak link and get disabled first (and losing your Reactor shuts your ship down completely). Some components also have a scale where they start to fail at a certain damage level until they finally give out after taking too much damage. Running RO3 on a Reactor that only has 10 HP means you are dropping it to around 4, which is probably going to end up reducing Reactor Output rather than increasing it - same goes for Engines, Capacitors, and Weapons that are so low on HP that a level 3 Overload does 50% damage or more. But that has nothing to do with your question.
