I'm still on my starter ship and I'm looking to upgrade, naturally.
The problem is, I have no idea what I'm looking for. I thought starships were "deeded" items that you purchased as a deed and then customized as you wished. But that doesn't appear to be the case.
Then I thought you needed to buy a chassis and add components... problem is, all I see are chassis "blueprints", and I'm not sure if those represent the actual chassis or just something for a shipwright to use.
So what do I need to do to purchase/customize a starship? I've pretty much maxed out my starter, and it's unable to compete on the level of missions I'm taking on, so I'm stuck until I can figure this out.
Thanks much.

Get yourself some of those starship blueprints, take em to a chassis dealer at the starport, pay a fee, and he'll turn em into a starship deed that you can use to put into your datapad. Once you've done that, THEN you can load it with different components to make it go. Peek around the boardsto get some idea what kind of chassis hull points and mass you should expect for the ship you want to buy. (WhenI bought my first shipI saw thatsome dunelizardshad 40k -ish mass while others had over 80k)

thats because privateer ships had just had their mass increased in a recent publish. there really isnt too much variation in mass between the ships, as resource quality isnt very important when crafting them, but find out what is the near-max for whatever ship you are buying abd shoot for that.

Just to chime in and add my 2cr. I often read reasource quality isn't too important for chassis. While some pilots and shipbuilders are all too happy to go withcheap rubbish, In my considerable experience putting ships together that extra 200 to 800 mass can be well worth it. You can't add mass after the fact. And when you add that RE'd reward shield, uber guns and searching to reduce the weight of other systems to get it all to fit, you'll start to wish you didn't buy crap.
I've rebuilt frames for pilots for this reason. Mostly XWings curiously. Dunelizzards are the best all round Privateer ship, as you progress you'll be fitting larger and larger comps. You'll be cursing when you can't fit that MkII spacebomb launcher because you need an extra 200 mass then having to swap something out just to fit it. I assemble all my ships with non grind materials and sell at prices to match.
Look for a DuneLizzard with 84k+ mass. I typically sell them for 30k. I'm sure you'll be able to find something like that on your galaxy.

Just to echo what Flexman said, you won't notice the difference in chassis mass until you need it, and then it's to late.
As a pilot learn what loot components individual statistics are good or great, and start collecting pieces to hand over a shipwright to be RE'd that will result in outstanding components. In the end, you'll have a ship that is a combination of crafted and RE'd components that is everything you want it to be.
