Thread: idea to make ywings less useless, and give pobs a foreward weapon

how about for ships that have turrets you create a droid/weapon hybrid. when you have it fitted on a slot the turret will automaticly track and fire on enemy targets. of course you would have to give it a downside like less precise than the agressor guns, no player gunner possable with this gun and a lower max damage than regular guns. i think this could be done easily sience they could just copy the ai for the npc agressor turrets.

And for the people who want forward fireing pob guns, how about unguided rockets. Sell them in packs of 50 or so and be able to launch them as fast as you can pull the trigger.

They should do that for NPC Y-wings, first, heh. Those turrets have NEVER worked in my experience.

They have never worked period. If they did, you'd hear a lot more complaints of the uber-accurate Y-Wing turrets. They really need to fix them. After all, how hard can it be if the Aggressor already has code installed for that kind of thing?

Do you really want the NPC Y-Wings to get a top turret? The Agg is rough, but at least it can only shoot behind and above - a rather narrow arc, in my opinion. The Y-Wing top turret has 360 degree rotation, so it could track you as you do a head on approach, nailing you all the way in, and then track you after you pass, nailing you on the way out. The enormous firing arc of the Y-Wing or Krayt turret under NPC control has the potential to be one of the hardest opponents in the game.

That idea makes me think of the Tier 4 exit mission with the Gunboat that goes after players instead of flying a course. Except faster. And more maneuverable.

As for the original post topic: I'm ok with POB ships forcing crew tactics, while you can find (if you look) several posts pointing out the positive features of both the Y-Wing standard and Longprobe as player flown spacecraft.

Bring 'em on,

Those ships are such big targets and the shields are so underpowered they're destroyed before it matters.

Exactly. Y's are much larger targets than Aggressors are. Also, if Y-Wings acted like Aggressors then the strategy for defeating them would be the same as it is for Aggressors.

Of course the Ywing absolutely should fire 360. The lack of an even remotely tough (Awing isn't tough, just annoying) Rebel NPC is a joke. Once the techniques are mastered, an Aggie is no harder than any other TIE, but at least it keeps you on your toes. The same would be true for a turreted Ywing. I am 100% behind making things more challenging and even handed.

I think that if turret AI got scaled properly based on tier (less accurate and lower rate of fire at lower tiers), then on the whole the game would improve. Make lower tier NPC turrets weaker, but more prevalent, and let pilots hone their skill progressively. As the missions are designed now, the Aggies tend to appear as a nasty "gotcha" in the final tier, which is part of why they frustrate people.

As for giving a player Ywing some form of AI, no never in life would I want to see that. Ywings are plenty useful now, as long as you make the effort to learn them and use them, no changes really needed.

That's actually not a very feasible idea. Having a computer auto target and kill stuff for you gives you an easy way to run around and get xp, or to even get xp AFK. I think the easiest solution is to allow adjustments to the gun positioning if there is no gunner. Allow the pilot to pre-set the gun position and shoot(have the POV hat adjust it). Those talented and skilled enough to be able to maneuver this while flying at the same time would be great, and for those of us a little more coordination challenged you could simply point it straight ahead and fly it like a normal fighter.

As a 4 time pilot master Y-Wing pilot I must say that my Y-Wing now has hurt feelings from being labled useless. On her behalf, I am filing a a libel suit for defamation of character.
