Having just received my lvl6 reward engine I am in need of parts to re-engineer it and possibly other ship parts. What kinds of targets should I be in search of and in what sectors. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Tier 3s seem to give the best cross-section of mid-grade parts ranging from L3 to L8.

I find kessel a good place to loot, Deep space seems to suck for loot, at least in my experiences.

Deep Space is a real wildcard. A day ago it was all 1-4 level loot, today I had a string of level 8-10 loot.

NPCs seem to drop loot on a weighted scale, with the most common loot levels following a formula that goes (2*level) +/- 1. In other words, T3 ships will drop a lot of stuff of levels 5-7, T4 will drop lots of 7-9, T5 will have lots of level 9-10 stuff, etc. There's still a lot of deviation, but if you spend a lot of time looting a single tier of ship, you'll notice a pattern along those lines. It's a lot easier to find specific loot if you hunt by tier like this.

By the way, just because you're hunting T5 ships, don't expect every drop to be a level 10. It's just far more common to get them off T5s than other stuff, though I know T4s drop level 10 stuff now and then, and I wouldn't be surprised it T3 stuff did as well. And T5s do drop an annoying amount of low-level stuff as well--just stick with it a while. Loot drops should average out over time.

Did you check whether being overt changes chances on loot drops?

May be it's just personal but when I changed to overt and went doing duty missions I started getting more loot.

I've done both and haven't noticed any major differences in loot, but wasn't really paying attention for it either so might have just missed it.

I's say stick with Tier 3's. Tier 4-5 might have a slightly better chance of dropping higher level components, but it takes longer to kill them and a higher quality part is not garunteed. Tier 3's are quick, easy, and will drop what you need. Just visit an abandoned temple, sacrifice a few gungans to the loot gods, then head up into space.

I have also noticed that missions, duty, or whatever, seem to drop a higher percentage of loot.
