One of the reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire was, lacking the number 0, they had no way to indicate successful return from their C programs.

Quick, dirty, and easy guide to mining:

1) Shoot asteroid with mining laser.
2) Shoot chunk of asteroid that breaks off from it with mining laser.
3) Use the tractor beam to bring in the small chunks, and you will have asteroid material in your hold.
4) If you don't have a tractor beam, shoot smaller chunks with mining laser and it will do the same thing, but the yeild is lower.
5) When you land, CTRL-D, select your ship's radial menu, and select "Unload Cargo".

NOTE: I believe you can also use standard combat guns on asteroids, but again, the yeild is lower.
