I see droid chips for sale sometimes and was wondering if you can use ones that arn't from your own type of pilot? AKA I'm freelance so can I use a chip created with a Imp program on it? I thought once apon a time I read you could but my search fu is weak

Yes you can!
Get the Engine Overload 3 and Weapon Overload 3 program (the level 4 commands cause decay to your equipment) and program them into your Flight Computer.
Btw, I'm pretty sure thats in the sticky FAQ

Not only can you use them, but using different faction chips is the whole reason for the chips. You don't need them to program your computer with the programs you get from your faction. So go buy some, or get a friend to burn them for you ASAP, they are amazing things.

So do the level 3 ones, if you dont remember to repair when you're done flying.
Quick rundown:
Less then 10pts dmg will repair without permanent decay
More than 10pts dmg (from a L4 program or from any program used multiple times) will cause decay.

Well yes, I assumed you repair before you land.
Its pretty easy to remember, since otherwise you don't see the "repair" option on the station.
But true, it only doesn't cause decay as long as you don't get any more damage (be it from additional runs of the same program or combat)

There was me not repairing thinking any repair at all gave me decay

you can of course not repair at all and then go to deepspace to get repair without decay

Anything special you have to do? I could have sworn I bought chips before and couldn't get them to work. I will try it again though.

You need a Flight Computer.

I do have a flight computer I just didn't have any luck getting them to load properly.
