Is there any way to turn off the extra space graphics such as the red clouds and lightning? Yeah, they look cool, but they are murder when I'm tailing something and my framerate drops to 2. I've searched the options screen and haven't found anything, and was just wondering if there is something I'm overlooking. Am I the only person this stuff bothers? If so, just tell me to shut up and I'll go get an extra 512MB of RAM.

"such as the red clouds and lightning?"
No, that's a challenge you have to face. It's meant to be annoying and dangerous, shaking your ship around and blinding you.

Nope, it's for everyone, and RAM won't help. Trust me, that's 1.5 GB talking, and I walk around Coronet with all the distance details turned all the way up with no slowdown.

thats odd your getting lag from the Nebula's.
My system is antiquated (p4 1.6 512 RDRam GForce FX 5200 and to make it even worse, dialup connection) and the only thing that gives me any issues in space or the ground is tryin to manuever alot near space stations during repair or landing.
Have you turned off the frame to your cockpit? I know for me.. doing that increased my framerate from 15 to 35.
Umm also, lastly.. be sure to turn OFF file caching in the login console under options.
best of luck, hopefully this will help you

There is a Nebula density slider in your options, try that. even at 0 it doesnt cut them completely, but it helps.
Nebulag isnt unusal at all, and its a bit of a JtL bummer.

I get problems inside nebulas. Just looking at them perhaps drops my FPS by 2 or 3 frames but nothing serious. inside the nebula i get 10 FPS max and if its one of them with lightning as well, then its terrible.
The Nebula Desity slider helps a bit but not all that much

I have the same problem really... I think it's a similar problem with ground FPS. Nebulas are probably calculated by the CPU and not the GPU... which is a lot slower even at up-to-date systems. I know that my computer is quite good but nebulas kill my framerate as well.

Put the nebula dencity on minimum and disable the cockpit view, that will help to improve your FPS.

Thanks for all of the responses. I've turned the nebula sliders down and turned off the cockpit and got a slight upgrade. Guess I just gotta suck this one up. Thanks again.

yup.
Im currently on Dialup, and because of turning off the file caching.. I have virtually the same lag in cnet that I had on cable... that says worlds there. You'd be surprised...VERY surprised at how playable this game is on dialup.
you can see my system is no monster.. barely adequate these days.. i know..but it really seems to work out fine with simple tweaks to games like this.
filecaching will also reduce signifigantly your load times..etc.
basically it stops the game from saving every visual referance in the game to cache (ever see that "Out of virtual memory" warning?) which in turn gives you faster loads and processing..however the down side is... in new cities you havent been to yet.. say some no where npc city on tatooine... your pc must then load all that info from your hard drive.. so youll have a bit of that lag for a minute or two until it's done. after that... your normal.

Using a pretty OLD driver version for my GeForce 4 solved this problem.
I guess its best to try out different versions to find one that suits you
