This has probably been covered several times, but searching didn't dig it up so I'm asking afresh.
Recently I mastered Rebel Pilot. On my way up I barely used the Y-wing, and mostly stuck to small dogfighters. But I hoped the B-wing might work better against large targets, especially those hated gunships.
Still thinking in terms of the X-wing games, I was surprised that missles launch from the same close range as blasters. And Mark III Concussion missiles only made a tiny dent in a Tier 4 gunship's shields. It seemed like my blasters still did most of the work, and I just took more punishment for being in a big slow bomber.
Can anyone share tips or success stories in making missiles work? Are there situations where they're particularly helpful, or particularly not? Thanks!

Im prob wrong but i though Conc missiles did heavy armor and weak shield damage so it fits that would only dent the shields till you get to the armor...

Well... look at the damage those missiles do.
Most are in the range of 6k damage, or perhaps 8. Spacebombs Mark 2 reach above 20k.
Now look at blasters. They have damage around 3-4k. so with 2 blasters you do the damage of 1 normal missile. The time it takes to lock on a spacebomb II you have dealt twice the damage with a single blaster, and blasters don't cost money to fire.
In PvE I never used missiles really. The only thing where you can use them is against the Corvette, if you're solo (to knock out the subsystems)

For the lower tiers, I guess Consussion for taking out armour, siesmic for taking shields. Protons (IMHO) are useless....
Once you get to SpaceBomb 1's you can get some better use out of these. Great for taking out rear turrets on Aggressors!, Not bad for hitting single components on fighters.... my shipwright even made some nice one's that would one-shot kill anything lower than tier 5's.
Spacebomb 2's on the other hand... One-shot kill Anything lower than a Gunboat (Tier 5 AWings blow up really nice with these!) So any fighters Tier 5 and below go poof when hit with SB2's. As far as capital ships and gunboats these are still very useful, a single SB2 can one-shot any component on the corvette's, the ISD, or even the Reb Station. Very useful in a pinch.
Those SB2's get expensive (costs me around 3500 per missile....) so use them sparingly.
I like missles, I have fun with missles. For lower tiers Concussion/Seismic can be useful but honestly, I rather use the mass for bigger guns!

How on earth do you spacebomb a TIE Agressor? Can they really track that fast?
Well, for me I was Nuetral so they wouldn't auto-aggro me. Made it easy enough to hit /follow and let one lose (cheap but effective!)
If they were aggro'ed on me already I would go inverted, and try to remain in a steady roll on the underside of the aggresor. Target Weapon 1, and as soon as you get tone let one lose. Thats should kill the rear turret. From there just stay on his 6 and take him out.
When I was running Smugglers Alliance generally I would face 2 Aggressor's, 2 Advanced, and 1 Decimator in tier 4. First I would hit that Deci (aggro'ing all the fighters) then same as I described above.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Though now I'm confused because everyone's saying concussion against armor - the Shipwright skill tree says concussion missles are for shields, and the ones I got had a higher than 1.0 shield damage rating.
How on earth do you spacebomb a TIE Agressor? Can they really track that fast?
I loaded up my B-wing with Mark II bombs to give them a try. Still had to get in close to fire them, though with bombs that seems reasonable. Maybe I'm making the mistake of targeting shields first, before targeting components like weapons. From what you describe it sounds like a bomb will go right through the shields and take a weapon out.

This thread got me curious, so I loaded up my Tie Advanced with proton 3's and went out on a friend's 'vette mission. Safely shielded by the corvette's engines, I was able to take out systems with 2 missiles each without exposing my tender butt to any fire from from the ship's systems. Then it became a matter of cleaning up the reactor, bridge, and misc stuff I didn't get to. Thanks!

SpaceBomb 2's for the win!!!!!!! LMAO!!! Only takes 1 SB2 per Corvette component, as opposed to 2 Photon 3's... same deal essentially. SB2's will cost you around 3500 per missle, were as Photons are cheaper to produce. I prefer Concussions and Seismics over the Photons though. Also... just an FYI. You can group both launchers together so they lock and fire at the sametime BUT it seems only one missle actually does damage, save your ammo and your money, only use a single launcher at a time.

LOL, but you have to be a master to use spacebomb 2's and you need 13k of space in your Tie...

Last night I took my TIE/LD into Kessel (I'm grindng Storm Squadron currently) Nothing is quite as funny as pecking away at a tier 5 BWing for 15 minutes! The funny thing is that a SB2 Launcher has more mass than that entire ship.

ok, CLARIFICATION for the original poster
I don't know what Vegitaa is thinking, he should know better!! hehehe
Concussions are for killing shields, Seismics for armor and protons are equal. Spacebombs hit both for very high damage.
Personally I only use concussions in a single gun ship and only if I can spare the room. I use a blaster in the ship for equal shield/armor % damage and use the concussions to weaken shields on ships like Aggressors and Gunboats.
I like to load Spacebomb mark 1 for my tier 3 and 4 missions if I know I will have to kill a BunGoat
Target the engine first and let her rip. Then you can kill off fighters at a safe distance from the crippled Fun Boat and then come back and waste the GB
Also good against the vette components
