Hiho,
hopefully there doesn't slip any older thread regarding this problems through my finger, because I already used the search function (no flames plz).
I am one of the lucky guys that already own a Y8 Mining Vessel. I equipped it with one Blaster, one Mining Laser and one Tractorbeam.
When I launch into space, I can't use the Mining Laser and Tractor Beam, even when i change slots for them in the Management when on ground.
Is this a known problem? And if so, is there any solution or is it already adressed?
Thanks for your Help

I think that's because you need a pilot sitting in the chair for them to work....hope this fix this little inconvenience.

Actually, at this time, it is next to impossible to mine with the Y-8 even with a full crew. The problem is the gun placements. There are changes on TC and we will see what ends up. Until then, you are better off using a fighter to mine. Depending on your faction you want a 3 gun model if possible. One mining laser, one tractor, and one gun for the pesky priates. You also need a starfighter cargo hold. The large currently holds 1550.

The first time I tried to mine in my Y-8, I could not do damage to the asteroids. There must have been a stealth fix, because it works now. I have tried mining with my Y-8 both solo and with one crewmember. I have a crafted Mark III mining laser in the pilot gun and a tractor beam in the top gun. Solo, I can blast chunks and collect asteroid using the mining laser, but it is very difficult due to the maneuverability of the Y-8. The solo extraction rate is so low it is not worth it. An elite mining laser would help, but it would not be enough. With a gunner in the top turret, we did have some success with hitting the big chunk with the tractor beam while I blasted it with the mining laser. This is really hard since the firing arc of the top turret does not intersect with the main gun, so you have to hit the chunk on the bottom while the tractor beam hits the top.
With the new turret placement, it will be much easier to mine with a pilot and gunner. You do not really need a bigger crew, maybe a defensive gunner if you're mining in Kessel. With the new shields, even the tier-5 pirates will take a while to do much damage.
One interesting fact about the Y-8 we noticed is you do not have to be a master pilot to sit in the ops chair. My crewmember was tier-3 and was able to run my droid programs.

The crew member does need to be of the same factionas the ownerto sit in the ops chair.

Good to know. My crewmember was the same space faction. Does this apply to the Nova/YT/Deci as well? A novice Alliance pilot can run ops in a Nova? For some reason I thought the ops chair was master-only, but it makes sense that it would only apply to the pilots chair.

Guide to fast and efficient Y-8 mineing
Pre requisits:
- 2 accounts 2 computers (someone has to be in the top turret at all times, I can't imagine an actual player wanting to do this)
Equip your Y-8 like this:
- Top turret is the tractor beem
- fixed forward gun is your Y-8 elite mineing laser
- rear mounted wapon you can do with as you please, its mostly useless
- droid progrms: Reactor OL4, Cap OL4, Engine OL 3, Weapon OL 3, Shield shunt 4
- Cargo hold, bigger is better
When you launch:
- 2nd account get in 1 of the 2 opperations chair and run the 4 overloads.
- after over loads are complete move the 2nd account to the upper turret
- Toggle the Tractor beem on with the 2nd account (doing it from the pilot seat will only turn on an imaginary tractor beem that does nothing)
- While looking in first person view pilots chair adjust the tractor beem so that half of the beem runs down the middle-left strutt in the forward window. This approxamatly intersects your reticle's cross hair at 50m-150m from target rock.
- Once the beem is aimed the pilot needs to zoom out to external view. You cant see jack from the interior view.
- use the laser on the big rock to break of a chunk
- Target the chunk and match its speed.
- Optimal distance to target is 50m-150m. if it's farther than 180m, just turn around and break off another chunk. dont bother chaceing anything.
- Aim the beem at the center of rotation, Put the white flashlight on the green lead indicator.
- Tap the chunk with the laser and SLURP 90-100% of the chunk instanly pops in your hold. Most of the time I do not bother picking up the small potatos the splatter around. but if you must you will be at the same speed as the little rocks for EZ pickup with the beem.
If I were to do this in a fighter, I would use auto follow instead of matching target speed. A fighter is better able to adjust speed than the Y-8 and autofollow puts you in the most optomal distance and aimed at the center of rotation.

Until they up the yeild rate on mining, it's way too time consuming to mine. I believe Pub 24 is going to fix this. And yes you can mine in Y-8 solo. I've equipped the elite mining laser on the front hardpoint. It's fired by the captain. With all the overloadchips running I can turn almost as quickly as a M22. But, as I say, the yields are so small per asteroid it makes it painfully slow. Fingerscrossed, it'll be far more worthwhile after Pub 24. My cargo hold is 33k cap.
