Three super-heavy mining lasers with as high refire as possible, and just blasting at the asteroids while someone else covers you? It seems, from what I've read, that this would be the most efficient way to mine - lots of targets, and a little bit of ore coming out of each rock. I know the ore spawns look like they're designed for this style mining - they tend to go up and down from the center of where you shoot.... One would think that this kind of mining would be pretty effective. Two fighters covering you should do it.

It's a possibility I've considered, though not attempted yet.. There's no way to know which section a chunk is going to pop off.. and currently with the lifespan of chunks, I think the missed pieces are going to exacerbate the lag problem.

the down side to mineing too is that those peices that are flying off and never gotten noone else can get them. I tried a bucnh of times to get free floating peices and no go.

Did you mean the Y-8? The YT can only have 2 guns.
But yeah, I've thought about trying something similar. One of these evenings I may take the Y-8 out to a relatively safe sector (tatooine, iron) and park "under" an asteroid, and hop in the top turret.
I think if you tried to do the drilling with the forward gun, only about 50% of the rocks would probably move "up" rather than "down" where your top-gunner could shoot then. The rest... well... you'd have to hope some of them move past your ship at a good angle so the rear-gunner could get some shots, and hit the small rocks before they go out of range.

Tried that myself .. (uber shields so most of the asteroid bandits can't even hurt me)
Problem is the mining laser only works in the main pilot controlled gun port.
If you load your mining laser in the turret you just blast away all day and no chunks ever break off the asteroid.
Whether it's a bug or not they'll probably say it's "intended" to prevent solo mining with those huge cargo holds.
