I have flown with quite a few pilots who methods of killing gunboats is somewhat spastic and often times fatal...
There is a way to get even the most uncoordinated groups to kill a gunboat together if they are willing to follow instructions. I call this the "follow the leader" method for obvious reasons.
Some of the pilots I fly with cannot quite get the "fly under and behind it" part of gunship killing. They tend to be more of the "point and shoot" type of pilots. Against fighters this works pretty well (except for maybe tie aggressors). Attacking a gunboat in this manner will fry even the toughest shields if you attack it from a bad angle. This often has tragic (and sometimes comical) results.
The trick in coordinating such a group is the get them to form up in a column while still at least 1500m from the gunship. The leader should be someone who can tell the front from the back of a gunship (long story). The order that the pilots will attack in must be agreed opon before the mission starts. The leader takes the whole group in a chain towards the blind spot. Everyone should be targeting the gunship's weapons.
If the leader gets jumped by fighters or the gunship swings around on him, he should break off and let the number two pilot lead the column (assuming at this point his shields are mostly gone). It is important to brief your pilots in advance that if their shields suddenly get hammered they should turn away from the gunship, shunt and boost out of range. By the time the 3rd or 4th pilot becomes the leader the gunship will have lost most of its weapons and no one in the flight should have taken any armor damage. At this pointit should bequite easy to pick off the gunshipas it can no longer fire back effectively.
I realize that the uber pilots can solo a gunship easily. Most of the peeps with JTL however, cannot. Some of the can't even tell the front from the back...

If the group is uncoordinated to begin with, how do you get them coordinated enough to fly (effectively) in formation?
It sounds like a good method, more or less the same thing that I do over several strafing runs, but split down so every member of the group does one run at the same time or a little after the previous person.
Might work better if you let everyone come at it from slightly different angles, that way a missed shot from the gunboat is less likely to cause collateral damage on the guy following you

The point was, the group is uncoordinated and the described method is the easiest, simplest way to get a bunch of pilots coordinated.
I do agree with the different angles being better, but you'll need to get everyone in firing range at roughly the same time so no-one bears the brunt of the turrets, requiring much more coordination then: "line up behind me for an attack run, peel off when your shields get hit heavily. ready? CHARGE!!!!"

My not so unique method, tell them to wait until I've disabled the engine and then they can free for all it from below. Let them learn by watching from a safe distance. As to how I disable? I become ONE with the GB by sneaking up to it from below, matching speed and then firing away at the engine. I'm sure it looks amusing as I'm either right below the GB or I'm "inside" of it since space combat permits us to fly into things that shouldn't be possible.
