I'm playing this game on a Dell Inspiron 8500. I know it's not hte best platform to play the game on, but it's what I have. I have a Radeon 9000 AGP Graphics card also. Game runs fine for me. But I also have the graphics on everything turned way down. Espeically the nebula Density. Just too unrealistic with it turned up. But i don't have many problems flying in space. It'll get choppy at times, but mostly in Yavin or Kashyyyk when there's a ton of people flying.

How much memory you got in there? Does the video share main memory? Anything less tham 1 GB RAM will cause drops in framerate. Also, even with the nebula stuff turned all the way down, you're still going to get lag in those regions.
