I haven't played since 3months after launch so everything is pretty new to me and what isnt new is now very different.
I've been playing the space expansion and have gotten my first row of Imperial Pilot boxes filled up. Bought my first Chassis (the regular Tie) and put some of my looted components on it, the main improvement being a better gun. However still using the prototype shield, armor and engines as I had nothing better.
I've read the stickies but was wondering if anyone knew of any videos that showed someone doing evasive maneuvers, such as the 'tight spiral' described. The poster in the guide says the bottom two links of sigs are videos but either they aren't there anymore (he has the line 'left because of CU', or I am blind. The latter is normally true
Basically though I'm using a mouse and keyboard and I sort of do a spiral type thing but I get hit with every shot so I doubt that I am. I also feel like I turn pretty quickly but that's probably because my ship is so lowbie that it is very slow compared to the later ships.
Anyways, mainly wondering 2 main things:
1) How much of an improvement is using a Joystick over a mouse?
and
2) Anyone have some links to someone pulling off some good evasive moves that I could watch because so many of you seem to mostly get the job done by not getting hit faster than your shields can regen. I get shot up and drained pretty quick once 2 or 3 decide to go for me. Would really like to learn how to avoid that hehe. Also saw that many dont get hit with missiles often but I have gotten nailed by 2 at least the last 4 times I've died. Basically once I fly into a random swarm of tier 1 and 2's I always encounter missiles. Also, do you eject or stick it out? Saw a thread on that and it pretty much said go down w/ the ship.

Get thee to a computer store. A joystick (or a very good gamepad if you are used to console games) is tons better than a mouse. I pair my joystick with a secondary controller: Saitek Cyborg Graphite and a Belkin Nostromo n50 SpeedPad. I've heard the n52 SpeedPad is even better, so if you can afford it, get it. Both are programmable and easy to set up.

I think it is what you get used to. The best pilot on Naritus uses a mouse and keyboard, and few can touch him.

I would get a nice stick makes the whole experience more fun.
Current sticks on my PC's;
Saitek Cyborg Evo, 3 axis with throttle, plenty buttons and Left/right hand.
Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold, 3 axis with throttle,an oldie but a goodie, left/right hand and can be found very cheap these days.
Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, 3 axis with throttle, another solid stick with plenty buttons Right hand only.
also have used an old Microsoft Sidewinder 3D pro which worked fine and is now on one of my guildies PC's.
Looking at getting a Saitek X-50 Hotas. ( Better be good or the wife won't let me have it).
The corkscrew you mentioned is by using all three axis, roll, pitch and yaw, which are easier to perform with a 3 axis stick.
In real flying terms look up "Barrel Roll" which may give you an idea of what that looks like.

Some of the stuff I picked up over the years from various sources, googled a bit. Some technical, some basic pictures with description. All for atmospheric flight with gravity, but plenty of these manouevers work in JTL too. If you or anyone else want to look for more, google for ACM (Air Combat Maneuvers) or BFM (Basic Fighter Maneuvers)

Thanks for all the great replies guys. I'm most used to mouse + keyboard, but that's mainly because I haven't played a good flight sim in ages. Basically haven't used a joystick since Mechwarrior 2 hehe. I no longer remember the names of the flight sims I played back then.
I've always liked them but I've just not seen any that really grabbed my interest. Played Battlefield 1942 but that's hardly a sim heh. Did enjoy dogfighting and strafing alot though in that game I gotta say.
I'm gonna give the mouse till this weekend and then I'll most likely buy a stick, thanks very much for recommending several.
Off to go get some practice...just wish the repairs weren't so costly for a broke noob heh. More incentive to get better though

In case you didn't know you can sell space loot to the Chassis Dealers in a lot of Starports for 1k per level of the item.
