Thread: Does anyone else use the old TIE Fighter control scheme?

I'm an old TIE Fighter vet from way back in the day and it has always held a special place in my heart. It was one of my first PC games, and hot damn if it wasn't ****ing incredible back then. Hell, it's still incredible now, many people citing it as the best flight sim of all time (not the least of which was Gamespot in their top 50 games of all time contest). So, naturally, I got the control scheme etched into my brain. Anyways, when JtL came along, I hadn't been playing TF for a while, but amazingly, when I sat down to the controls, I immediately reverted to TIE Fighter mode and would start mashing on the wrong buttons. This frustrated me to no end, so eventually one night, I sat down and rewrote much of the keymap. Anyone else have a map that looks like this?

r= target closest enemy ship

e = target last ship to damage player

t = Target next enemy ship

y = Target previous enemy ship

, = Cycle Target component forward

. = Cycle Target component backwards
Backspace = Full Throttle

\ = 0 Throttle

= =Increase Throttle

- = Decrease Throttle

I don't touch a keyboard... got all my buttons on the joystick

But I did love TIE Fighter back in the day.. I remember playing that with my classic gravis 2 button joystick.

I played TIE Fighter on a Gravis too ... in fact, I played JtL for a while on that SAME Gravis until I bought a new joystick!

Nice to know I have some company,

I had "Enter" for match speed, too,but that became too much of a problem due to chat, hehehe.

i have a joystick i just cant get used to the rudder fuction being the roll, im used to Descent/DOS Xwing where i held down one of the top buttons and i would roll if i pushed the stick to a side. wish JTL supported this but

Yeah, I know the feeling. Now I just have m as match speed.

I always played on a pilot's yoke, myself, never really got the hang of a joystick...

Joystick is all I've had to ever play this kind of game, heh. In JTL Beta I was thrown off a tad as far as control, since in TIE Fighter pushing the stick left and right seemed to be half roll and half pitch(having to hold the second button while pushing to a side for just a roll).

As I've told my guildmates, this game has ruined me for TIE Fighter, as far as Ship Collision is concerned(though there's a balance considering we don't have the ability to shunt back and forth between the capacitor and shields as often and as fast as we like, or redirect power moment to moment as we need it).

Ha ha! Good to know I'm not the only one. Whenever I play TF after a good JtL session, I'll wind up as a smear on the side of a Corvette. Personally I still hold TF as the superior game, but I suppose JtL isn't too bad...
