Thread: Storm Squadron Tier 4 Mission Questions
The rest of your advice is great, and pretty much exactly what i did. This is the only thing that I don't really agree with. But I think it's a bug. When I went up against the Novas, if I remember right, I got shot at from both turrets on either side. They are supposed to have one on top and one on bottom, but i think they shot through the hull. But if you have a fast enough engine and CtSS it's not really an issue.
Try to stay under the Novas, usually they have both turrets on top and none on bottom. Works wonders for 'rail' novas, but those ones will chase you so they're a bit more trouble.
The Heavy TIE or Int work so well here, then, because they're fast, small, maneuverable targets, to the point where even the AI can have trouble hitting them at high speeds. I know some people like using Bombers for the extra firepower and essentially limitless mass (when you're working with level 7 gear, anyway), but I find the margin of error in a ship like that is actually less so than in a light fighter--if you get in a jam with an Interceptor, it's a lot easier to boost away in a twitching corkscrew that isn't going to get hit by anything but blind luck and/or sheer firepower than it is to do the same in a class of ship that, to quote one of my favorite pilot analogies, "turns like a dying huf dun."
Another thing you can do with that strafing pattern is to fly through the formation guns blazing etc., then when you get out of range, keep on flying until there's some separation between the Novas and their fighter escort. Then flip around and pick off some fighters until the Novas get in range and boost away again.
The concept is in minimizing the amount of damage the enemy can do to you at one time. So pulling fighters away or only being in range for a few seconds, it's basically the same thing. Strafing takes a while, but it works, and it can be surprisingly fun to push your shields to the limit as you gradually wear them down.
I soloed it using a Heavy Tie
Are you using overload programs?
I had a pretty fast engine so I was jousting the novas, going straight past and letting my shields recharge (using shield shunt as needed). Boosting in range usually works better for me than boosting out of range. Just make sure you're jinking as you pass them.
Then after the novas are gone the fighters are not as big of a problem.
I'd recommend:
EO3 (or 4 depending on your reactor), Ro4, CO4, CTSS3 or 4 (I like having extra cap energy for shooting so I usually use SS3) and WO3.
Also calling in a bomb strike before you yourself actually engage them should temporarily take some of the pressure off you.
A lvl 8 RE'd blaster and/or lvl 8 (QID) engine would help alot.
A crafted mk IV shield with around 1.9k energy f/b should be enough.
I wouldn't really use the bomber if you plan on soloing it.
