A guildmate on our site recently asked why every thread I post in seems to have some kind of space content to it, and while he was joking, it got me to thinking about what the rest of this game can gain from emulating this profession.
Plus I'm a Smuggler on the ground and we all know how well that's going...
So anyway, not sure if this has been discussed before, but here's what I came up with:
• Space is the only part of the game that is immune to the bleating of Jedi who want to pwn everything. To me, this is the Holy Grail.
• Piloting requires actual player skill, you can't afk grind it, and it's damn good fun.
• The way the profession skill tree is structured is, in my opinion, a great way to structure ground elite professions. The gating which requires you to take whole tiers to progress, would, I think, solve a whole load of problems with people dabbling and abusing abilities from professions, which results in things being nerfed back to the stone age - feign death is a prime example of this.
• Also, the way that tier 3 and the Master box is entirely mission based rather than xp dependant, plus each other box requiring a completed mission to level is a great way to redirect the progression mechanic away from mindless grinding. How cool would it have been to have had missions instead of having to grind xp? Any profession would benefit enormously from that added content and it would make the journey to master that much more fun.
• The Master xp bonus. A fab idea to get players to really explore every squad and all the JTL content there is. One of the great strengths of the ground game to me is that you aren't locked into whichever professions you pick at the beginning - you can be what you want, when you want. I think that the a similar reward for remastering a ground profession would really help players enjoy new specific profession content - especially considering the recent revamps.
I open the floor to discussion....

1. Indeed... however those jedi are players just the same and they goal is a valid reason for playing... this doesn't mean we have to listen to them, but I don't know if you can ever get rid of the "power lamer" if they wern't (could not be) jedi they would be MR,MCM,master cheese ball monkeys.
2. I have to agree here but be carefull what you wish for... get more of the ground pounders into space and they will just bring there ground attitudes and expectations with them, if the Devs listen then we may begin to see our imperfect but lovable game erode.
3. Yeah that is a fun way to do things but the ground game would never be able to work that way... there is stuff to do after mastering pilot (Ok not many things but still) the grind is for the most part the ground game.
4. Meh... I disagree here, with piloting it is like riding a bike it comes back quick... if I droped Carbineer to become a Combat Medic how would my previous job help me in my new one?
I like your concept on paper but beleve it or not there are many ground pounders who like the game (more or less) the way it is.
I find that dedicated pilots who do spend time on the ground add much to the community already by being kind and helpfull. To be honest I just laugh when I get called a non factor, ground PvP holds little intrest for me and half of these kids who so called "pwn" me couldn't fly there way out of a paper bag... (I know I help some of them when they have a space requirement on a quest)

Love it, there are so many players I know who are like this who think they rule the world on the ground.
Then they try and take that approach into space, get their attitudes handed to them on a plate and end up needing your help!
And I'm not knocking the vast majority of people who play Jedi. In and of itself, yeah, it's a great goal to have if that's your cuppa. My main beef is with the way this game is tinkered with and tailored to that very small demographic by the Powers That Be to the detriment of every other player and profession.
That's why I like space, 'cos it's free of that.
Oh and the lag isn't as bad either...
And no spam...
I'm getting carried away now, aren't I?
