If you use more power than youre reactor has, it will let you launch, and I havent noticed any side effects. Is there some secret effect i dont know about? (and whats the point of the reactor overcharges, etc?)

Just a little over, and things just work with reduced efectiveness, your engine will be slower for example. If you're over by a lot, your weapons can get disabled. Just run the reactor overload droid program to give everything enough power.

Yes. You can launch with your power in the red (over the "limit"). Bad things can happen tho, like especiallywhen you try to use certain specials or droid programs. If you really go over, you'll findsystems are disabled, but usually your ok if your just a little bit (1-2k?)over in the red. Can't remember exactly how much.,

Reactor power is provided from top to bottom so to say. If you press V inflight or check the "manage" option of your ship, it goes downt he list there.
First your engine gets power from the reactor. Then your Shield. Further down the list the Capacitor (since Armor doesn't need power)
If you have energy usage in the red, that means that usually your last equipment (Either Gun, Missile Launcher, Coutner Measure, depends on what oyu have equiped) gets less power than it needs and runs on reduced efficiency. Like the Gun needs 1000 Power but only 500 is left for it. So it runs at 0.5 Efficiency. That means, it does half the damage, uses twice the amount of Capacitor Energy, refire rate could be doubled as well etc.
All other Components that are "below" this gun in the list (Other guns, missile, CMs) will be disabled, and not working at all.
If you press V in space you'll see a small symbol, like a small house beside any component that is running on low efficiency (its also beside the reactor, but you can ignore it there)
Reactor Overload increases the output of your Reactor. Reactor Overload 3 produces 60% more and Reactor Overload 4 90% more energy. So a reacotr with 10000 output would be able to support equipment that need 16000 or 19000 then, without shutting them down.

I think the order in which systems loose efficiency/are deactivated is not just defined reading the ship interface from top to bottom but there are other systems with priority. CM launcher for example has low priority but the engine on the other hand looses efficiency right afterwards.
Anyways if you experiment, watch out that your droid interface is not deactivated or you wont be able to normalize again, which is bad. If that happens you can use some of the pilot commands (emergency shields, ethrust, eweapons) that automatically reset your system to default.
On the other hand that means that it is not good to use these commands in the heat of battle

It always shuts my systems down from bottom to top. Always.
If the engine looses efficiency then everything else is disabled already.

not for my a-wing... maybe it depends on the order which you put your components in? as i use my engine on more ships that might have lower priority then?

don't think it matters... if you can send me a screenshot once with components disabled or reduced and those below are working fine, since it never happened to me?
