Thread: help a space sim noob choose a joystick
Saitek x52 Flight Control System www.saitek.com. All the buttons on the stick and throttle are whatever you want them to be. It is fairly indestructable, versitile, and has a very smooth and accurate feel. Cost $130 you can probably find one for less if your a savy shopper.
Get this if you want to go the joystick route. Program the buttons to vital function keys, but in my opinion, as a simmer who uses the HOTAS Cougar in SIMS and the KB/Mouse in JTL, don't spend more than 30 bucks on a joystick.
Cheap as chips from PC World (About £30 iirc), looks nice, I haven't needed to do any maintenence or generally look after it. It's a nicely priced joystick that lasts a good while and generally does the trick.
Then, hope you can find a copy of the 4.0 version of the controller software, as the 3.02 doesn't work on 2k/XP.

I have always enjoyed the Microsoft Sidewinder 3D pro, also the logitechs are good.
If your looking for a top end highly configurable joystick then the Saitek is the way to go, but where your looking for a good but easy to use, little to no adjustment type of joystick I would go with one of the two I listed above. They both have plenty of buttons for JTL, but not so much junk on it to make it difficult to use. I like the feel of the sidewinder slightly better, but really there's very little difference between these two joysticks and it's more personal preference for brand or appearancesthat will make the decision.
