Just another message listing stuff wrong with the Y-8.
First off I can get the mining laser to shoot but it will not mine any asteroids. A friend and I tried to mine for a hour yesterday. We tried every mine in the lok and naboo systems and were never able to get anyhting.
Second with weapons. I have the lower turret outfitted with a blaster. When we were attacked I could never do damage to ships that were comeing twards me head on. I could only damage them from the side and rear profiles.
Last only the person doing the fireing on the Y-8 can see the lasers anyone else on there will not even know, that is see or hear anything going on.

Personally, I'd use a starfighter to mine until they get the kinks worked out of the Y-8. Just get a large starfighter cargo hold and go from there. You should be okay when you get attacked as well, since you will most likely have a backup weapon to use in defense. I personally use my Oppressor for the job, since I can outfit the second weapons slot with a mining laser and still fend off attackers.

I use mining laser level three for defense, they seem to work well on shield and armor, takes a lot of hits on a tier 5 to do it, but they work well enough that the pair can decimate chunks as they fly off.
