Hey how much money can people make on mining? is it profitable or just something to pass the time between publishes?

Like any resource you have to find a buyer. Selling random haul to a station is an option, but you'd be better off filling specific contracts for a Shipwright, similar to what rangers and other hunters do for tailors, chefs, armorsmiths.

I dunno about your server, but my server's shipwrights are fighting over who gets the contents of my cargo hold..

I have a Master ShipWright, though he is mainly to supply My Pilots with parts and, occasionaly chassis, Missile and Chaff Packs, I have considered selling Mining equipment and the Heavy Variants of the Starter Ships, All of which require Asteroid parts. You can't make any mining tools, at all!, without Asteroid parts, oddly enough, and, though the Tractor beam you recieve when you do the Y-8 Quest is the exact same a Ship Wright can make, the Mining Lasers and the Cargo Holds are not.
These tools sell, and, sell well on Kauri, from what I can see. The Lasers and Tractor Beam require 4 Different types of Asteroid Parts;
- Iron -- Tat, Corellia
- Crystal -- Dath
- Methane -- Dantooine
- Carbonaceous -- Rori
With the Cargo Holds Requiring Two;
- Silicaceous
- Cynomethanic
Also, The Heavy Chassis Require Two Asteroids Parts as well, in 1K blocks;
- Petrochemical -- Yavin IV
- Iron -- Tat, Corellia
In addition to these, the BARQ speeder repair kits take two types as well, though, I am not entirely sure which they are, Iron and Silicaceous I BELIEVE.

Im guessing alot, because like the ranger harvesting avian meat from tweetybirds for docs, space mining is a PITA and has a low yeild output.
On top of that, i dont think hardly anyone does it. So if you were to find the most efficient method/crew to space mine, you could stand to make a pretty penny for a little while.
