Thread: Splitting up long Missions?

Hello. I have just reached tier 3 in freelance pilot and have found that the missions can be quite long as well as hard. The hard part doesnt bother me, if i fail i can try again. Or try to find another way to complete it like get some mates along etc.

However the long part does bother me........ I am currently on tier 3 mission 2 for the RSF. I am stuck on it at the moment as i cant complete the second part on my own as of yet. However that isnt what irks me about the mission. It is the first section that is annoying me now.... The escort part of the mission takes an age to do. It isnt hard, just incredibly dull due to the length of time it takes.

So this is my game time currently in space : Spend about 20 plus minutes escorting a ship around Naboo space... easy peasy. Hyper to Corelian space and fly to a dogfight ambush.... Hard, i die. Repair in Corelian space, then hyper back to Naboo and get the mission again. Escort again.... bit dull second time but hey xp and loot, not too bad. Hyper to ambush... die again. And repeat, except each time the escort gets more and more annoying as its just dull by now

Now dont get me wrong, i know the missions shouldn't be easy and quick to do like the earlier missions. After all it is tier 3 so at this stage we are meant to be pretty good pilots and even good pilots cant always be doing the 'classy' dogfight jobs can we?

But after the fourthto sixthtime it is bothersome and dull and boring to redo something so long and tedious before you get back to the part that you are stuck on.

So i was wondering if it would be a good idea for long missions like this to be split up into sections. And once a section has been done you can skip it on later tries. So the first time you attempt a mission you have to do all parts of it in full as you are meant to. But if you get past a part (Like the escorting of the Cadamo Sun) and fail in a later part of the mission then you dont have to repeat potentially dull things. I mean in my case when i get killed in the ambush part of the mission after the escort part, why when i go back to the mission giver cant he say " Get back up there and help them pilots the ambush needs you to succeed!" and when i go back in space i just have to go right to the ambush WP instead of once again taking an age to escort the Cadamo Sun on its leisurely cruise.

This would make the missions i think much more enjoyable, and i have seen it implemented in other games and it does make a difference to my enjoyment. An example would Grand Theft Auto San Andreas which uses a similar idea to save players the annoyance of maybe driving all over the map to the missions seperate parts by allowing you to load into the appropriate area instead of driving there over and over again with each failure. Of course this option only works for you AFTER your first attempt where you have laboriously drove around all over.

Anyway thanks for listening to my idea and thank you for your time.

Well, it's not really needed and would make getting to Master Pilot ridiculously easy - even more than it is right now. You don't have to fight every enemy the mission throws at you - creative use of IFF scramble and hyperspacing to the same sector can get you out of almost every tough situation like that and almost completely eliminate the need to fight. Of course, don't do that if the mission requires you to destroy a certain enemy group except if you need some time away from them to replenish the shields. As for the fighting - always disable the enemy ships first since disabling is much quicker than destroying them one by one. Also, droid programs such as Weapon/Engine/Capacitor overloads and Capacitor>Shield shunt are very useful for lower tier pilots - you can get someone to burn you programs you can't burn yourself - the chips are tradeable.

I'm quite certain you can complete every mission, if not from the first try, then from the second by using the above methods (I'm a really really poor flight sim pilot, and have done every mission in Smugglers Alliance by myself, from the first try, in a Dunelizard), and of course, if you can't - don't bother trying to solo the hard part countless times if it frustrates you, it's much better to get some help. What's tough to take on by yourself should be a breeze with one or two wingmen.

Another tip I used when solo-ing harder missions.

You don't always have to go for the kill - disable ships when you get overwhelmed then move on to the next pest.

Repeat, until you're safe and finish them off when you have time or forget about them unless they are a specific mission objective.

Thank you for your replies and the tips, although the mission i am on i beleive is slightly bugged according to other posts i foundwhile doing a search for tips on how to complete it as the amount of ships you have to kill in the ambush is quite a few and you get killed very quickly and your support dont even move or shoot back to help you

However i should point out that my original post wasnt meant to complain about how i cant do that portion as i am happy to retry till i have done it trying different tactics or by getting some friends along to help me... i will complete it in the end The point i was trying to make is the first part of this mission is an escort which takes quite a long time really, espescially when you have had to repeat it quite a number of times as i and many others have.

So surely it would be a good idea to make missions portioned and that once you have completed one portion you do not have to monotenously repeat it over and over if you happen to get stuck on a later portion of the mission. As i said you would have to do the whole mission over all, so it wouldnt make the mission any easier or harder just less repetitive if you happen to get stuck. The escort has now become a mindless chore for me while i attempt to finish this mission and as such is lessening my enjoyment(and im sure many other peoples) of the game which is a bad thing... games are meant to be fun not bothersome and like achore ( i have that feeling 6 days a week at work thank you )

Again thank you for your time in reading this and for any comments.

I have to agree to some extent, My alt just completed Tier 4 Mission 1 of the smugglers allience. After an hour of straight out fighting I failed the mission when a couple of decimators popped me. After an hour and a half solid fighting I almost failed when the decimator spawned again, luckly my guildmate managed to keep it busy long enough for me to make a run for the last waypoint.

I don't mind repeating the missions, but the non-stop fighting for hours is annoying. It get so that it isn't fun, its not a challange and I just wanted it to end..

Over here in the UK theres a law that if you work at a computer your supposed to have a 5 min break every hour, it might be wise for SOE to take that advice into account when planning long missions. People like to be given the ability to stop for a few mins, stretch, get a drink, visit the little pilots room, or whatever.
