Checked the FAQ's really fast...but didn't see this...

Do ships decay?

I was just curious if there was a serious penalty to getting blown up - if so, I'm gunna be a LOT more careful with my YT-1300.

Your YT, along with all other ships, has a Chassis rating. Taking Chassis damage (after your Shield and Armor are dropped) will lower this number. If your Chassis number or your Systems number either reach 0, you blow up and your Chassis is automatically reduced to 0. Getting your ship repaired causes the Decay. You lose bout 1 point for every 9 or 10 fixed, hence lowering the maximum values. Your ship Chassis and components Armor and HP ratings can all Decay.

Not eloquently put, but I think that answers your question.

I guess I could have just said 'Yes.'

Well, not 'insanely' slowly, I think. Take a brand new Chassis with, say, 5000 points - nice, round number.

Take it out and get your butt handed to you by another player or some tier 5 Aggressor that you couldn't get the rear turret blown fast enough....

Repair at a Starport and your nice, new Chassis is down to 4500.

Do it again and you are at 4050. 3645. 3281. 2953. 2658. (I'm rounding, please don't geta'nalwith my numbers)

You won't lose your ship from a couple of deaths, no. You have to remember that with each death your Chassis has fewer points, which means you die faster next time (fewer points for the opponent to blow through before you go *poof*)

But realistically, if your chassis is being damaged, that means that your components are all toast and therefore you have no chance to defend yourself or get away--or even get to a station for repairs. So really chassis damage is just the deathblow. It will come quicker as your ships is destroyed more often, but the amount of chassis hitpoints really makes little difference to the ship's survival.

I read a quick bit about this in another post, but thought it deserved it's own thread to get a complete answer.

- How does ship (chassis and its components) work?
- If an ADK kit can be put on anything that decays, does that include a ship chassis? (such as the Bellabub, which is a once only ship). If so, is it worth it?

Thanks in advance for helping out a new pilot!

For every 10 points of damage that you repair on hitpoints/armor, you get 1 point of decay. The minimum hp/armor a component/chassis can have is 10 points. You're NEVER going to lose your component or chassis to decay. Overload programs induce damage. Level 4 Overloads induce enough damage to the affected components to cause decay upon repair. You can get around this by either going to Deep Space for a decayless repair or by repairing 25%, 25%, 50% using the Space Station dialogue for repairs. So long as you don't repair 10 points of damage in a single attempt, you won't induce decay.

Example: You use Engine Overload 4 and cause 16 points of damage to your engine. If you repaired it all in one shot, you'd get 1 point of decay to your armor/hp. If you repair 4 points, there is no decay. You're at 12 points of damage. Repair 3 points (25% again), there is no decay. You're at 8 points of damage. Repair all of it, you get a decayless repair.

However, if you've been blown to heck by a PC or NPC outside of Deep Space and you're not an Ace, you are SOL.

ADK's can not be used on any ship chassis or component. They're just for the ground game.

Thanks! I didn't know this and I didn't see it anywhere in the FAQ.
Cheers.
