I am a master smuggler and have the sell out box, which allows me to hold a positive factional balance to both factions at once. I am a Colonel in the rebellion, but I'd like to try the imperial squadrons just so that I can say that I am a 9 time master, and to see what it's like on the other side. Has anyone tried buying faction from the opposing faction and talking to the recruiter to see if a ground-based smuggler rebel can fly as a spaced-based imperial?

No, you have to drop reb and join imp.
I realize that it kinda makes sense for a smuggler, but I for one am really happy that only Imp in stars has to be imp on ground, and vice versa for rebels.

I'm a bit annoyed at that, actually. If they had done that from the START, fine, but they didn't...

Um, I don't think you could ever be a reb and fly imp. You used to be able to be ground neutral and fly for faction, but never cross faction

No, you could. That got changed shortly after I got the game. And while it made for interesting scenarios from an RP perspective, I can't really see how much good would really come from it.
