I'm gonna do neutral pilot mostly for the fun of it but would hate to grind a whole profession without getting the arc in the process. Any advice?

ARC quest requires you to be rebel on the ground. Going rebel on the ground will strip you of your rank.

And surrendering Imp will cost all of your faction points as well, so no banking XP. I wasn't really paying attention when I dropped Imp, lost my rank (big deal) and 18k banked faction.

If you have another friend that's a Colonel without a lot of banked faction, You could delegate your faction to him/her, drop Imperial and take Rebel to do the quest, then rejoin Rebel and have them delegate your fp back to you. You'll lose some points in the process, but it'll help you get back to Colonel faster.

Also, remember that both Smuggler's Alliance and CorSec paths will send you up against the Empire, while RSF will send you up against the Rebels. If you are an RSF pilot, you cannot do the ARC quest, even if you haven't killed Rebels yet (believe me, I tried).
Well, you can. But you can't help the ARC-170 in the space mission kill the Imperial ships that spawn to shoot it down. You just have to sit there and watch. Most likely, they will die.

Can you group with a Non-RSF pilot friend and let him shoot the TIE's down?

I'm sure you can. I didn't try it though. I had a Dunelizard "decked out" in level 4/5 equipment, and dropped RSF, picked up Smuggler's Alliance just long enough to get the Dunelizard cert, then did the mission. The Imps were so focused on the ARC, they never even shot at me. Once it was done, I dropped Smuggler's Alliance and went back to RSF. With double xp I was able to earn back the skill boxes I had before within a couple of hours.
Now, if you're master and don't want to drop, go ahead and try it with a non-Imperial, non-RSF pilot in your group. If not, you can always start the quest over from the beginning. It doesn't take long at all.

You have to be a rebel combatant to get the quest from the queen, and non-RSF neutral or rebel pilot. Basically if you want this ship, you're gonna have to drop faction and regrind it later, which will also drop all of your pilot skills if you are imperial in space.

you will lose your rank, and theres a very good chance of it all being a waste of time when you cant generate the ship, due to'not having the badge'

The problem is you HAVE to be ground rebel to do the quest. Not just rebel either, you have to be combatant as well. The queen will not talk to you unless you are Reb combatant. Other than that "small"
problem, you can do the quest as corsec or snugglers, I think.
