I am currently 2333 and am doing Imperial Inquisition mission. The current mission is a fourt part mission (that i have survived to so far). Starts with destorying a shuttle, then escort, then fighting a massive attack of x and a wings, the fourth part is taking out a gunboat that has 2 weapons and its escort of 6-8 fighters. I target the gunboats weapon 2, but when i go in for the attack, its guns and the guns of its escort eats me up. I tried attacking one of the escort to pull them off the gun boat, but they are not falling for it. As getting help for a lenghtly mission like this is hard, anyone have any suggestions on how to go about and taking the gunboat out? I am currently flying a HEavy Tie, with a102 enginge and descent laser. Wishing now that i trained the 3332 so i could use a tie bomber....

There are several tactics in this part of the forums as to taking out the gunboats. They are similar in delivery and provide the same results. Stick to something similar, and you'll be golden. Make sure when you line up on the rear, you are not horizontal with the gunboat, but at an angle underneath shooting upwards. A good distance is between 4-500m. Use the "m" key to match the gunboats speed (must be targeted in your reticle) untill its disables, then kill your engines and hammer away. Sometimes you mught have to re-adjust because your getting to close, I usually just fly downwards from it and then turn upwards towards it and match speed again and hammer away.
The single gunboats are known more for their jinxing and crazy ivans then the flight group of three in DS, so be carefull in that aspect, ready to hammer your boost and fly away in a non straight direction.
The support fighters must be killed first, or they will eat you alive while you chew away at the gunboats sheild and armor. Best to charge them while they are in formation and once they all break to attack, fly about 500m away from the gunboat and engage the support fighters.
Good Luck

Thanks for the tactics, sounds like a viable plan. The problem that i have is taking out the escorts. I can fly directly at the escorts, fire on them, and they stay with the gunboat. Instead of just the escort going after me, they all stay information and gunboat and escorts come after me all together.

Cap to Shield Shunt IV is your very best friend, and if you're in one of the newer fighters, put the absolute best front armor plate you can find on that puppy. A 1000-1300hp L6 plate will soak up about 5-6 turret hits from a Tier 4-5 gunboat before it works through to your chassis.
With missiles, all bets are off, though - make sure you take those in the tail, and missiles are another good reason to never stay in front of an AI-equipped gunboat for long, because they can peel 'em off like stickers. If you take an AI missile hit from a T4/5 on armor, you need to withdraw and boost to repair.
As Viper said in Top Gun - "It's better to retire; save your aircraft."
