I'm a brand new Freelance pilot, working out of Corellia. I'm on the last baddie of my first Tier 1 mission set--when I complete this, I can train my first box. (Yay!)
Thing is, I can't kill this guy.
Before I realized how the mission system worked, I practiced by going out and randomly attacking Black Suns, commerce raiders, etc. I got my sea legs and started doing the missions. I've had few problems blowing things up, but I cannot get the darmned Black Sun Eliminator! He goes too fast for me to get on and stay on his tail, and he stays too far away for me to get more than lucky hits on him. At best I had him to 50% shields and 50% armor, but his shields regenned so quickly I couldn't keep pounding him.
And then... He hyperspaced away.
This happened three times!
GAH. What do I *do* here? Someone mentioned something about a "quick turn." I don't know what that is. I try to roll as he comes in, but by the time I realize he's coming for me, I generally can't turn fast enough to get behind him.
Are all the ships above him this tricky? Am I going to have to get a guildie to log me in and kill him for me?

I'll assume you're still in your rookie ship. Chasing, quick turning (throttling down, whipping around, throttling up) arent really options. Best thing to do, is simply sit there. Line up as he turns toward you, and suck up the hits as he comes in, don't get rattled, and blast away.

I also suggest seeing if you can loot some better blasters. I picked up some very good equipment going through my missions. Better blasters will help you immensly in a lot of the missions.

I don't mind taking the hits so long as I can take the guy out. I'm going nuts.
Ratape, I'm VERY new to all this, so I'm not sure how to figure out what I need yet. If I'm right, I can use Mark I equipment? I'm in the newbie Scyk.

Throttling down to half speed as you turn, even in the starter ship, will help you turn more quickly. Get used to using throttle a lot.
I would ditch the starter ship and get a player-madescyk (sp) light figher and put some better components in it.
Use the [ and ] keys to target engines to stop him from hypering out on you.
Start learning about flight commands. Get yourself a flight computer and use your own reactor and capacitor overloads and captoshieldshunt and get engine and weapon overload chips from an imp.

I also had a problem wiuth this mission when i first started then i found out that you have to aim a bit farther out then you n ormally do and do not press and hold down the fire button. tap it jus tto fire it when you knwo it should hit. if you press and hold it down you will run out of energy quickly in the starter ship. You'll get the hang of it after awhile just experiement a bit more.
and yes targeting teh engine is the key which you can do by pressing the ] button when you have it targeted.

Getting better stuff will help you for grinding experience and getting through tier2, but honestly the starter ship is just fine for getting past the first 4 missions. They are perfectly designed, and you just need to practice a little bit more and things will start to gel. Just make sure that your first training box is for Components! then you will be able to use levels 1-3 and its worth it to do a little shopping for parts then. Trying to find uber level1 stuff to get past 1 mission is frankly, a waste of time.

hehe
I made myself a Scyk and used it from novice to the first level 3 mission. Never died once.
The thing is to know what equipment to fit, and of course being able to find it. Being an MSW gave me a distinct advantage.
Droid Interface is also VITAL.
Here are my FC's in my datapad: (you can use whichever you are certed for regardless of program levels! Get Ready Chips!)
FC m1 - Weapon Overload 3
FC m2 - ^ +, Engine Overload 3
FC m3 - ^ +, Reactor Overload 2, CapToShield Shunt 2
FC m4 - WO3, EO3, RO2, CtS3, WCO3, Shield Front Reinforcement Moderate, Shield Rear Reinforcement Moderate
FC m5 - same as 4 except RO3 instead of 2
FC m6 - exactly the same as m5, but it has Free Space I can use later if I need to.

Everything in bold... I don't understand.

They are each of the Flight computers (FC) that he used on his way up. Each level has more storage than the last. Each is a list of the programs he has installed. Look at the droid commands tree in your pilot profession to see the ones you have access to. look at the other piloting professions to see what they have, and what you will have to get from them, in the form of Ready Chips. Any pilot can use any program, they just have to find someone who knows it to burn into a chip.
