Thread: Does the tractor beam yield higher harvest?

A buddy and I were discussing if by using the tractor beam you get a larger "harvest" per small asteroid.
Does anyone know? Tried search, but maybe I'm not wording it correctly.

Sure does Thad, about twice as much as a mining laser.

but does using the trator beam actually let you harvest more resources quicker?
I've tried 2 configs - phat x-wing with 1 gun and 2 mining lasers and same ship with 1 gun, 1 mining laser and 1 tractor beam and to be honest couldn't see much difference. With 2 mining lasers you should the chunks off so much quicker, and the smaller chunks too, I just found it easier.
Must admit I'm tempted to go full on and use just 3 mining lasers then just shoot any asteroid bandits stupid enough to attack me with them !!
Just a matter of preference I suspect, although sure someone has stats to prove me wrong ....

I use the tractor beam all the time on my pre-quest-bug Y8, and it makes a huge difference when talking about filling up a 34,375 cargo hold. I know that when I get really into mining, and can dedicate time, I can average around 10k an hour with my Y8 setup. Only have a single elite laser in the pilot controled slot and the tractor beam going in the upper turret, and run my standard droid commands.

I run 3 mk3 lazers in my rihkxryk. I can fill the cargo hold in about 10 minutes. I never could get the hang of tractor beams. the chunks aways fly past me and it takes me longer.

I'm a dope, I was still shooting it with the laser after the tractor beam brought it closer! DOH!

I use a KraytM22 with 2 minning lasers(markIII) and a tractor beam. This is the best loadout that I've used so far. Two MarkIII minning lasers are enough to take out any bandits, and shoot up the asteroid while using the minning laser to pull them in.
*Hint* - Before blasting up the medium size chunk you should manuever your ship right behind it. Blast it so that it breaks into all of the small pieces, and immediately turn on your tractor beam. This will almost instantly pull in just about every chunk once you get the hang of it. It litterally takes me longer to travel to the asteroids now than it does to fill up my large starfighter cargo hold.

Right now, blowing an small chunk with mining lasers (ANY MINING LASER, extraction rate means nothing here) gets you 10 units of resource. Sucking it in your cargo hold with a Tractor Beam, yields 20 units.
What I do is trying to suck the most chunks with the TB, but I blast the ones that get far instead of chasing them.
My X-wing has a lvl 8 REd weapon, a Mark III mining laser (ER means nothing for chunks, but helps you beating the main asteroid and offers an extra damage when dealing with asteroid bandids) and a TB.

Oh, rates will double with P24. 20 units by blowing a small chunk with your mining laser, 40 units if you suck it with your TB.
